  2. Agenda • List the elements that are included a resume? • Explain function of the objective. • Why should you have several different resumes? • How and where does your career pathway fit into your resume? • What are strike words/keywords?

  3. Rationale for a Resume • For each business, specific skills are required. For instance: one would not send the same resume to a zoo as to a grocery store. If the job at the zoo is taking care of animals, would the same skills be applied to stocking shelves at the local grocery store? • Your objective at each business will vary also. You may want to deliver excellent customer service at the grocery store and your objective at the zoo may be an internship to learn how to become a veterinarian. • The resume serves as a quick reference guide to your skills, experiences, and education/training.

  5. Resume Worksheet Directions • Open a Google Doc: label it last name, resume worksheet • Go to a business online that you would like to work for. • Go to career and make sure they have an online job application-not a printed one that you mail or hand deliver

Resume Worksheet Cont. • Type your name, date and Resume Worksheet at the top • Copy and paste the company’s url address onto your google doc. • Next you will copy and paste as much written text as you can find onto your document. This information will be used to create your objective and several other assignments so make sure you get as much as you can.

  7. Resume Worksheet Cont. • Using the information you have gathered, answer each of the four questions. You do not need to use complete sentences, just find the words that are used on the company’s website for each answer. • Next, using the words from each questions, fill in the blanks in the sentence. For example: • Safeway, a responsible, generous, and customer-focused business, is a great place for an individual that is committed, hard working, and enjoys a dynamic fast paced environment. I desire a position as a courtesy clerk at your Kapolei location.

Resume Assignment • Go to: https://www.careerkids.com/resumeSSL.php • Click on My First Resume • Enter your personal information (name address, phone number) For this assignment you must know your correct personal information but may alter one digit or letter for security reasons • Open you Resume Worksheet document and copy your objective sentence you created. Paste it in the box stating: Do you have a specific job or goal in mind?

Resume Cont. • Continue clicking the boxes that match your interests and responsibilities • Pick the best skill that matches the job you are applying for-ignore the best school skill • Special Achievements: In this section look at the business and determine what they do in the community and as a business- you will want to list goals, awards, and other activities that match the company’s goals. (These are strike words/keywords.)

Resume Cont.Jobs you have had: This section requires some outside of the box thinking. • Yard work- Landscaping • Babysitting- Child Care • Dog Walking-Pet Care • Car Washing • Sewing • Lemonade Stand/Market • Housework for others • Make dinners for others • Paint walls and houses • Construction Work

Resume Cont. • James Campbell High School • Ewa Beach HI • select grade • Past school: Type in your career pathway choice in the past school name box and then put in the year you completed in the town box • Do NOT put in your intermediate or elementary schools. Just skip the next box • Click on GET RESUME

  13. Resume Cont.Copy and paste your resume onto a new Google doc, label it: Last name, Resume, then modify it! • This is what your resume should look like-only your information instead of mine. Make modification to it so it looks like the one on the right • Change Position Sought to Objective if you like • Put a space between each section • Work experience-put the job and phone number on same line • Remove Currently in 10th grade and put place and graduation date on same line • Add Reference section below Education-you may use me as a reference or you may type available upon request-either one is appropriate • Below “Education” Type References

  14. Formative Assessment Directions: Open a Google Doc, label it last name, resume assessment, put your name and date on top of the document. Copy and paste the five questions below and answer in complete sentences. Questions three and five must be full complete paragraph (5-8 sentence each question/answer).
