The Scientific Creation Story The Theories of The Big Bang and Evolution
Targets • To describe the Scientific Story of the Origin of The Universe. • To describe the Scientific Story of the Origin of Life.
Before there was a Universe Nothing – no time,no space, no matter
The Primeval Atom One Atom which contains the potential for a Universe .
The Atom Expands Until it is the size of a cricket ball
Then…… About 15 Billion Years Ago… When it can no longer contain its own mass, itexplodes!
This explosion is Very Big… (it creates the whole Universe, so it must be big) and… it’s a BANG!
Which Leads the Abbé Le Maitre to Call it… I’m a Genius! “THE BIG BANG”
The Result of the Explosion is… CHAOS stuff BOUNCINGaboutALLOVER THE PLACE, FORMING HUGE CLUMPS OF MATTER AND GAS IN SPACE WHICH WILL EVENTUALLY BECOME PLANETS AND STARS.
Outline of The Big Bang Theory Copy this passage then fill the blanks using the word bank: • About ___ billion years ago, there was a massive __________. At this point _____________ began. The explosion caused it all to start, all matter in the __________ today was begun then. It’s even more odd than that, though, because it was not only matter that was created at the Big Bang, but ______ and time too. Word Bank: space everything 15 universe explosion
By the end of the lesson you will be able to answer these questions: The Beginning of Life:Questions • What is the scientific theory of how life came about called? • Where did life begin on Earth? • Why have some species survived and others have not? (Everyone should be able to answer this. Some of you will be able to give the scientific word for what happens to creatures which do not survive).
The Beginning of Life: Evolution Life started in the water with single celled creatures Over millions of years these early life forms grew into different creatures. Some lived in the sea. Some grew legs and lived on both land and sea Gradually, some developed fur instead of scales...even 30 million years ago there were many mammals Others grew wings to find more food The ape-like creatures began to walk on their hind legs, leaving their hands free to do things like make tools. This was the beginning of human kind. Finally, over 1 million years ago, ape-like creatures developed.
The Beginning of Life: Explanation • The word “evolution” simply means “change”. • The scientific Theory of Evolution says that animals and plants have evolved into the species we see today because they have developed ways of fitting their environment. • Creatures which no longer suited their environment (like dinosaurs) became extinct (died out).
