  1. Real Life Examples on: Adding and Multiplying Polynomials By: Sarah Santamaria Teacher: Mr. Miguel Class: Algebra 2 MT 2 Level 4

  2. What are Polynomials? • Polynomial: Expression of more than two algebraic terms that contain different powers of the same variable(s). • Polynomials could be added, subtracted, multiplied and divided. • Ex of Adding Polynomial Equation: • -6mn+18m²-5n²-14m²+8mn-6n² • Ex of Subtracting Polynomial Equation: • 4x²+12xy-7x²y-(20xy-5xy²+8x²y) • Ex of Multiplying Polynomial Equation: • (2n²-3)(n²+5n-1) • Ex of Dividing Polynomial Equation: • (2x²-5x-3)÷(x-3)

  3. Ex of + and x Polynomials in Math • Ex of Adding Polynomial Equation: • -6mn+18m²-5n²-14m²+8mn-6n² • Combine Like Terms: -6mn+8mn, 18m²-14m², -5n² -6n² • 2mn+4m²-11 • Ex of Multiplying Polynomial Equation: • (2n²-3)(n²+5n-1) • Foil Method: 3n4+10n³-2n²-3n²-15n+3 • 3n4+10n³-5n²-15n+3

  4. Real Life Ex: Multiplying Polynomials • A rectangular swimming pool is twice as long as it is wide. A small concrete walkway surrounds the pool. The walkway is a constant 2 feet wide and has an area of 196 square feet. Find the dimensions of the pool.

  5. Step by Step: Finding the Answer • (2x + 4)(x + 4) - (2x)(x) = 196 • 2x² + 8x + 4x + 16 - 2x² = 196 • 12x + 16 = 196 • 12x = 180 • x = 15 • The pool is 15 feet wide and 30 feet long.

  6. Real Life Ex: Adding Polynomials • When you Reduce or Double a Recipe, you are Using a Polynomial. • For example: Pancakes • 1 Cup Flour (We'll Call This A) • 1/4 Cup Sugar (This is B) • 1/3 Cup Milk (This is C) • 2 Eggs (D) • 1/2 Teaspoon of Vanilla (E) • Pancakes = 1A +(1/4)B +(1/3)C + 2D +(1/2)E • If wanted, you can double the recipe, by multiplying everything by 2
