  1. Floor Systems Sill Sealer – placed between the foundation wall and the sill to prevent air from entering the basement. Termite Shield – also placed between the sill and the foundation wall to help prevent termites from entering the house. Made of tin sold in rolls. Sill – First piece of lumber placed on the foundation, 2x8 minimal. Made of preasure treated lumber and bolted to the foundation wall.

  2. Floor joists – Carry the weight of the floor, rest on the sill and the girders of the structure. • 2x8 or greater • TGI • Laminated • Truss • Laid out 16” on center. • First floor joist set at 15 1/4” from start point. • Remaining pulled 16” from this point

  3. Rim Joist (Joist header)– Placed around the outside perimeter of the structure standing on end. Same size as the floor joists

  4. Girder • A girder is a support beam used in construction • Stacked – 3 or more conventional 2x? Material stacked together • Laminated – layers of wood glued together to create a 2x? Material. Very strong

  5. Steel I Beam – made of steel to carry loads over a longer distance (span).

  6. Steel Column (Lally column) • Column supports the girder of the house and transfers the weight of the structure to the Pier.

  7. Bridging • Placed halfway between the sill and the girder. • Connects the floor joists together to eliminate any twisting or bounce in the floor system. • Solid, same 2x? Material as the floor joist • Wooden Cross, creates an x pattern

  8. Metal Cross, creates an x pattern

  9. Sub floor • First layer of flooring placed on the floor joists • Made from ½”x4’x8’ sheets of plywood or OSB.

  10. 3-4-5 Triangle for square

  11. Procedure • Mark one of the short walls on the house as “A” • All measurements will be pulled from here • Measure a distance of 15 ¼” from side A on one of the long walls • Draw a line • Draw an X next to the line on she side away from side A • Draw another line 16” away from the previous line and draw an X next to that . • Repeat these steps all the way across the foundation. • Repeat these steps for the other long wall • Glue the Rim joist in place around the entire perimeter of the house • Glue the floor joists in place on tour marks. • Lay out and install your bridging down the center line of the floor
