  1. Nutrients: the stuff that makes your body work By Conor DohertyComputers 8/Period 1

  2. Protein • One of the most important nutrients • Found in red meats, poultry, dairy products, nuts, seeds, and legumes • Makes protein molecules that have specific jobs • Digestive Juices break down protein into amino acids • Amino acids can be reused to make proteins

  3. Carbohydrates • Two types: • Simple (sugar) • Complex (starches) • Major source of energy • Starches are bread, crackers, pasta, and rice • Fibre, vitamins, and minerals found in complex carbs

  4. Vitamins • Found in most foods • Each has a specific role • Fat soluble vitamins stored in fat till use • Water soluble vitamins flow through blood • If not used, then disposed of • Need to be replaced often • Examples: Vitamin D, Vitamin C, Vitamin B

  5. Minerals • Helps you grow, develop, and stay healthy • Body uses minerals for different functions • 2 types: Macro + Trace • Don’t need much Trace minerals • Need a lot of Macro minerals • Types: Calcium, Iron, Zinc etc.
