Part 1 – Pre-test Before beginning this activity, see what you already know about light and reflection. Read the statements in your packet and circle T for True or F for False. When you have completed the statements, you are ready to begin. Click on the arrow to go to the next slide!
Part 2 – Gotcha! • Your teacher has drawn an ‘X’ on the chalkboard and given a flashlight to one of your classmates. • Your classmate will turn on the flashlight and try to shine it on the ‘X.’ • Was your classmate able to hit the ‘X’? Click on your answer.
Part 3 – Light Sources In the previous classroom example, the light source was the flashlight. What are some other light sources? Brainstorm other light sources that you use or see everyday on the Web in your packet.
No matter what the source, light travels in the same way. Let’s try it!
Part 4 – How does light travel? Make a hypothesis. Click on the arrow that you predict shows how light travels.

Part 6 – Mirror, Mirror, on the Wall… When you look at a mirror, you see your image. Light rays bounce off of your face, hit the mirror, and bounce back to you. The “bouncing back of light” from a surface is called reflection.
Part 7 – It’s all about the angles! If you rolled a ball straight at a wall, what would it do?
Light rays bounce off of a mirror at the same angle they hit the mirror.
If you tilt the mirror, the light from your face bounces off the mirror at an angle, not back to you directly. You don’t see your face in the mirror; you see the reflection of it. Look at the illustration below to demonstrate how light bounces off of a mirror.
Part 8 - BACKWARDS Most mirrors are made of glass. Behind the glass is a shiny silver layer that reflects light. A mirror like the one in your bathroom doesn’t really make a perfect image.
Try it! • Look in the mirror. • While looking at your reflection, touch your right ear. When I looked at my reflection, my image was touching my… Right ear Left ear
Part 9 – Mirror Game Click on the mirror to play a game using reflection.
Part 10 – Equality No matter at what angle light strikes a mirror, it will “bounce back” or reflect, at exactly the same angle… but in the opposite direction! This is why your reflection image was touching your left ear!
reflected ray ray of incidence Let’s take another look at our “bouncing light.” From math, we know that a ray is a part of a line that has one endpoint and continues in one direction without end. In the example above, the ray of incidence goes toward the mirror, and the reflected ray leaves the mirror at the same angle.
Part 11 – Huh? Okay, this might be a little confusing! Let’s break it down. Pretend you are looking at a tree out of an open window. As the illustration shows, the light travels straight to the tree.
Now, when you look into a mirror, light travels in another way. The illustration below would be an example of looking into your bedroom mirror and seeing your bed in the reflection.
Part 12 – Symmetry A line of symmetry is a line that divides a figure into two parts that look the same, or are congruent. Click on a figure that shows a line of symmetry.

Part 13 – Last rule of Light Earlier in the lesson, we identified that light travels in a straight line and gets dimmer the further it is from the light source. Now we understand the 3rd rule of light. 3. the angle that a light beam makes when it hits a mirror (the angle of incidence) is the same size as the angle the beam makes when it bounces off the mirror (angle of reflection).
