  2. What? • The Iguazu National Park is a World Heritage site. • It’s name came from the Guarani word for “Great Waters”. • Translated into Spanish it is “aguasgrandes”. • The park is a large, protected environmental area in South America.

  3. Where? • The Iguazu National Park is located the northeast part of the Misiones, a province of Argentina. • It is shared with Brazil and is near the border of Paraguay.

  4. Who? • The state and federal governments were the ones who decided to establish it.

  5. When? • It was created on October 9, 1934.

  6. Why? • It was created in order to protect the biological diversity of the subtropical rainforest and the impressive scenery that surrounds the Falls. Coatimundi

  7. How? • The area was being threatened by the construction of roads, so the federal police took action and had it established as a national park.

  8. The Past • The area originally belonged to the Guarani people, before the Spanish and Portuguese arrived there. • They were organized in tribes and were highly knowledgeable about plants and animals. They used the natural resources in the area to survive.

  9. The Present • It is a tourist attraction, but it is also an area that is subject to scientific research because of its natural richness.

  10. How it shapes the country today • It generates revenue for the country because it is a tourist attraction.

  11. Trivia • It’s one of the top 100 waterfalls in the world according to the World Waterfall Database. • It was featured in one of the Indiana Jones movies.
