The gap allows the magnets in the flywheel to generate electricity and transfer it to through the armature to the ignition coil
The Gapping Procedure First: Refer to the manual to identify the gap specs

Why is the Armature Gap so important? It transfers an electric charge from the from the flywheel magnets to the ignition system and ultimately to the spark plug
