  5. Genetic, Hereditary or Environmental Factors • Type 2 Diabetes is triggered by your environment.

  6. Treatment • Exercise • Healthy Diet • Medications • Insulin • Weight loss surgery

  7. Role of Diet • The main goal is to lose weight, so Type 2 Diabetics have to monitor their diet closely.

  8. Role of Exercise • Lower Blood Sugar • Lose weight

  9. Role of Medicine It is not uncommon to take more than one drug at a time, and they can be used at the same time as insulin.

  10. Role of Family • It can be difficult to keep track of everything (blood sugar levels, insulin, exercise, etc.)

  11. Short-Term Management • Lower Blood Sugar Levels

  12. Long-Term Management • Lose weight with a healthy diet and excercise

  13. Effects on the Individual • “I’m not normal!” Effects on the Family • “We’re all in this together!”

  14. Statistics • By the year 2050, approximately 1 in 3 adults. • The Majority of people diagnosed with Type 2 are over 40 years of age. • Adolescents who are diagnosed are generally between 10 and 19. • Mostly seen in non-white ethnic groups (with American Indian adolescents at greatest risk.)
