Message • Make a Wish.
Visuals • A sign that says “Free Cupcakes” and cupcakes with candles set out for participators to take.
Delivery/Strategy • We set up our cupcakes on a counter outside of the Caf with the candles lit, and held up the sign that said “Free Cupcakes” and when people looked confused, we would say, “Make A Wish!” and then they understood what we were doing/wanted them to do. We used a poster (visual) and a verbal message.
Process • We decided that cupcakes with lit candles would be the most obvious way to make people blow without any other instructions. We created a comfortable, casual, and fun environment. We used the following props: • Candles • Cupcakes (St. Patrick’s themed) • Poster • Lighter • Water (to avoid lighting things on fire)
Results • We had 24 different people pick up cupcakes and blow out the candle. One boy tried to eat it without blowing out the candle first and then realized he would light his eye on fire, and blew it out. Some people were very hesitant to take something free with just a little sign and regular students. Most people were just excited to get free dessert. The results were very positive and everyone performed the action without having to be told.
Analysis • Our group came up with a lot of different ideas and words associated with blow but after group and class discussion we decided blowing out candles was the most effective. It doesn’t require any instructions and people (most of them) instinctively blow out the candle before trying to eat the cupcake. Our results turned out exactly as we thought and we were very pleased with our overall outcome of the project. Putting a lit candle into a cupcake was a sure way to get people to blow without giving them any verbal instructions.
