  2. The challenge • There are many benefits to exercising. Exercise, if done correctly, enhances stamina and increases muscle tone. It helps with weight management. Exercise releases endorphins into a person’s body and makes them feel good. It helps relieve stress. • Exercise—think dance, aerobics, jogging, and team sports—is a fine activity to socialize with others around. • However, it’s hard for people to decide on an exercise plan and to stay on it. Some benefits of exercise • Exercise cultivates self esteem. • Exercise enhances body image. • Exercise reduces muscle tension and enhances physical stamina. • Exercise increases mental productivity. • Exercise allows the body to return to homeostasis faster and reduces the physical impact of psycho-social stress. • Exercise improves overall health. • Exercise helps with weight maintenance. • Aerobic exercise, both short-term and long-term, are associated with improved psychological functioning. Types of exercises…for overall fitness • Aerobic exercise: Jogging, walking, swimming, tennis, roller-skating, bicycling, stationary bicycling, and dance • Flexibility exercises: Yoga, stretching, dance, walking and swimming • Strength training: Weight lifting, elastic bands, and resistance-type exercises • Coordination: Dance, balance, cycling, skating, and roller-blading Problem-Solving Series

  5. Places to exercise • The local gym • The campus gym • A local park • At home with a treadmill, stationary bicycle, or exercise equipment • Anywhere anytime… with at-desk exercises and walks to run errands, etc. Problem-Solving Series

  6. The proper level of exercise • Each person has a different optimal level of exercise. It may help to work with a fitness trainer to design a fitness program that fits with an individual person, a lifestyle, and the access to the fitness equipment. Problem-Solving Series

  7. Fitting exercise into a lifestyle • Making exercise a habit is the best way to ensure that one stays on an exercise plan. This means fitting exercise into an overall lifestyle—whether that means a regular walk in the morning or a visit to the gym over the lunch hour or an hour in the pool after studies.   8. Getting supports for exercise • Train with friends, in order to increase your motivation and shared fitness goals. • Motivate yourself with music that you enjoy while you are exercising. • Choose goals that are attainable, and start with incremental ones. Problem-Solving Series
