Welcome to 20.300Advanced Workshop in Biological Engineering Communication Day 1: Overview & The Writing Process
Today’s workshop… • Best practices for a flash talk • deconstruct two model talks • what elements make them successful? • listening/reading is a key part of communicating well! • Planning your flash talk • develop pre-writing and outlining skills • Draft your abstract • apply principles of organization and clarity
Your best practices notes for part I • Simplicity and clarity • Little text; large and clear images • Titles preview/summarize main point of slide • Structures matched with research question/goal/stage • problem + solution • exploratory questions • Evocative/intriguing title to capture attention • Memorable, iconic phrases • Attention-getting statistics/context • Animation for longer text or phases of visuals • Jaime – talk should be framed to accomplish speaker’s goal (find collaborator, share something cool, etc.)
Agi’s best practices notes for part I • Compelling title (it may sit there a little while!) • Background captures audience interest • a problem to solve, or • a puzzling phenomenon and interesting examples • Background lays sufficient foundation • to understand research project • to know that research project is feasible • Research project framed via questions to address and potential broader impact • Lots of visuals, including custom-made ones
