  3. Why is independence important? UN Paris principles ECRI recommendation nr. 2 EU directives 2000/43/EC and 76/207/EEC and 2006/54/EC

  4. Main lessons learned Overall high level of legal independence among NEB’s Structural independence from governments or ministries -> higher operational independence Vulnerability to political changes and national interests EU directives definition of independence is vague

  5. Recommendations EU definition of independence should be closer to ECRI’s recommendation nr. 2 NEB’s should be structurally independent of governments and ministries Monitoring independence of NEB’s by EU More awareness on independence issues
