GP Specialty Training Terminology • GP Specialty Training (GPST) – equivalent to other specialties • GP Specialty Training Programme (GPSTP) – a collection of rotations (12-16) • Rotations – a collections of posts over 3 or 4 years • ST1 = year one of the GPSTP • ST2 = year two of the GPSTP • ST3 = year three of the GPSTP (GPR) • GP StR = GP Specialty Registrar

  6. GP Specialty Training • 18 months in practice and 18 months in hospital • Year 1 – 6 months in practice / 6 months in hospital • Year 2 – 12 months in hospital • Year 3 – 12 months in practice • 4 Year Programmes – specific to individual Deaneries

  8. GP Specialty Training • What does this mean in Scotland and East Scotland? • Scotland overall ~ 290 rotations (i.e. jobs) • Three and four year rotations on offer • East Scotland • ST1 entry = 28 • 24 three years and 4 four year posts

  9. GP Specialty Training East Scotland • Westward Programme – 12 rotations centred around Stirling / Perth / Dundee • Eastward Programme – 16 rotations centred around Perth / Dundee / Angus (includes 4 “Angus Scheme” innovative programme)

The Recruitment Process UK process for GP • Standardised process • Eligibility Criteria and Person Specification • 4 preferred Deaneries – Scotland = 1 Deanery • On-line application through National Recruitment Office (NRO) • ST1 only • 3 Stages • Apply on-line – stage 1 • Machine Markable Assessment (MMT) – stage 2 • Selection Centre Assessment – stage 3

  13. The Recruitment Process – Stage 2 • Machine markable on 17.01.11 • 2 types of questions • Clinical Problem Solving • Situational Judgement Test • Very strict security – I.D. essential • Based on FY2 outcomes and person specification • Best 1 or 3 answers or Rank 1 – 5 • (Deferred result)

  14. The Recruitment Process – Stage 2 Results • Hurdle to overcome = minimum standard • Ranked to produce a short list • Matched to highest ranked available Deanery • Selection Centre will be in matched Deanery

  16. The Recruitment Process – Results • Scores used to produce ranking list – highest ranking candidates get 1st choice of programme • Single offer therefore rank carefully – only rank where you are prepared to work • Hold / Reject / Accept – 48 hr turnaround
