What is Autism ? • Autism is a lifelong developmental disability. • It affects communication and relation with other people. • It creates problems in the perception of the world.
What is Autism ? • Occurs within first 3 years of life. • This disorders affects stereotyped behaviors, interest and activities. • First described about ‘early childhood autism’ by Dr. Leo Kanner in 1943. • Sometimes, people with autism may show aggressive or self-injuries behavior.
The Symptoms of Autism Delay or abnormal function; • Social interaction • Language of social communication • Imaginary or symbolic play
The Diagnosis of Autism To diagnose a child whether he/she with autism or not Impairment in social interaction(at least two symptoms) • - difficulties in social interactions. • - lack of communication with peers • - failure to participation emotional and social interaction.
The Diagnosis of Autism Communication disorders(at least one) - delay in the development of spoken language or the lack of language development. - using repetitive,stereotyped or very subjective language
The Diagnosis of Autism • Imaginary or symbolic play(at least one) - Don’t play with social games which are suitable for child’s developmental process. - Repetitive and limited activities, behavior and interests. - Being constantly busy with parts of objects.
Autism and Special Education • Integration;children with autism can attend regular class with others. - pre-school, primary and secondary school. - full time or part-time
Autism and Special Education • Special Education classes; - maximum 4 children - public and private schools • Training Center for Autistic children; - provide services for children who cannot attend compulsory education. - Children in this training center should be 14 years old.
Interventions Educational therapies; • Applıed Behavıoral Analysis • Treatment and Education of Autistic and Related Communication Handicapped Children • Visual communication system • Floortime • Daily Life Therapy
Interventions Related Approaches; • Art and music are useful in sensory integration, visual and auditory stimulation. • Animal therapy include horseback riding and swimming with dolphins.Physical and emotional benefits, improving motor development,increasing self-confidence.
Interventions • Physical support,maintaining focus and participation are important factors for children with autism.
TempleGrandin • Women who were diagnosed with autism : Temple Grandin • She was diagnosed with brain injury when she was 2. • Today, she is a professor in Colorado State University ant she is a veterinary.
Conclusion • Awareness of autism; No one can do everything but every one can do something.
