  1. Plusquamperfekt The past of the past

  2. The basics • Plusquamperfekt is formed using the simple past tense form of haben or sein and the past participle form of the verb.

  3. Simple past tense: haben • Ich hatte • Du hattest • Er hatte • Wir hatten • Ihr hattet • Sie hatten

  4. Simple past tense: sein • Ich war • Du warst • Er war • Wir waren • Ihr wart • Sie waren

  5. Rules • Follow the same rules for haben and sein as are used with conversational past tense. • Sein is used for: movement, change of state or sein • Haben is used for everything else.

  6. When to use PQP • If you have two events that happened in the past, the one that happened first will be in PQP. • Another clue is the word: Nachdem (afterwards)

  7. So whats the difference: • Conversational past tense: Ich bin zur Schule gegangen. • PQP: Ich war zur Schule gegangen. • Conversational: Er hat eine Pizza gegessen. • PQP: Er hatte eine Pizza gegessen.

  8. How to decide to use PQP • Ask yourself the following: • Are there more than one events that took place in the past? • Did 2 related events occur at different times in the past? If you answer ‘ja’ to both questions, then use PQP for the one that happened the furthest back.

  9. Practice: Two events in the past: Ich habe meine Hausaufgabe gemacht. (first) Ich habe im Internet gechattet. (second)

  10. Practice: • Since I did my homework first: Ich hatte meine Hausaufgabe gemacht. (PQP) • Then I chatted online: Ich habe im Internet gechattet.

  11. Practice: • Putting it together with Nachdem: Nachdem ich meine Hausaufgabe gemacht hatte, habe ich im Internet gechattet. Or Ich habe im Internet gechattet, nachdem ich meine Hausaufgabe gemacht hatte.

  12. Lets Practice together: • Ich bin zur Schule mit meinem Fahrrad gefahren. • Meine Auto ist gestohlen.
