  7. “Good” May Be Used in Different Ways: • May be used in the Utilitarian Sense; to refer to that which is useful. • Genesis 1:3,4: “…and God saw that it was good.” • James 1:17: “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above. • We use “good” in this sense; in the sense of approval or usefulness. Cf. “He is a good student,” “those are good eggs,” “He did a good job,” “that is a good road,” etc.

  8. “Good May be Used to Refer to Character. • Psalm 25:8: “Good and upright is the Lord; therefore He will teach sinners in the way.” • God is: • Infinitely good, Mark 10:17,18. • Certain People were called Good, Prov. 12:2; Luke 23:50; Acts 11:24. Man may be good in a relative sense. • But God is so good that He is incapable of being bad! • Immutably, or unchangeably good, James 1:17; Malachi 3:6.

  9. But What do we Mean by “The Goodness of God?” • We do not merely mean merciful. • God is “rich in mercy,” Ephesians 2:4. • Mercy is joined with the sentiment of pity, and it extends to those who have merited punishment. • But God is merciful because He is first good! • God is “merciful, gracious, and longsuffering,” Exodus 34:6. • But He could be none of those things if He were not first “Good!”

  10. The Goodness of God is Reflected In: • Creation, Genesis 1:4,10,18,21,25,31. • The earth has all that is needed to sustain life, Isaiah 45:18; Psalm 104:24. • Goodness was especially evident in the creation of man! Genesis 1:27; Psalm 8:5; Psalm 139:14. • The Laws Given to Govern Man. • They were given for man’s “good.” Deuteronomy 10:12-13; 4:40; Psalm 119:104. • Divine Providence, Genesis 50:20; Romans 8:28.

  11. The Goodness of God Reflected In: • Answered Prayer! Isaiah 38:1-5; I John 5:14; James 5:16. • The Plan of Salvation! • Man fell! Ecclesiastes 7:29; Isaiah 59:1,2; Romans 3:23. • Divine goodness could not stand by as a mere spectator! Genesis 3:15; Galatians 4:4; John 3:16; Romans 5:8 • Love reached down to man! John 3:16 • But what was behind this kind of love which would go to such unimaginable lengths to redeem fallen man?

  12. What Should be the Effect of Our Awareness of the Goodness of God? • Examine the Evidence of God’s Goodness; it is all around us! Exodus 34:8. • Seek to be good, Romans 8:29; hold fast to that which is good, I Thessalonians 5:21; and do good, Titus 2:14. • We should certainly be thankful and express our thanks for the blessings which come to us from God, I Thessalonians 5:18.

  13. Conclusion: • Our Awareness of the Goodness of God Should cause us to: • Repent of sins, Romans 2:4. • Submit to the gospel, the very meaning of which is “good news,” Romans 1:16. • Obey Jesus Christ, the supreme manifestation of God’s abounding love, and infinite goodness, Hebrews 5:9.
