Mayan Funeral Mask From the Classic Era
What is it? My artifact is a jade mosaic funeral mask used by the Maya in the Classic Period.
What is it made Of? The mask is made of jade, inlaid shell, obsidian, and turquoise. It is assembled in the form of a mosaic. To make my artifact replica, I used clay and covered the mask with green tiles and round jade-colored stones in a mosaic.
What is it used for and how was it used? The funeral mask was used to cover the face of a ruler's corpse. The funeral mask protected the ruler during the journey to the afterlife. Pacal's jade funeral mask
How is it similar to something used today? In modern funerals, the body's face is covered with makeup to comfort loved ones. The makeup is like a funeral mask.
What category is object in and why? I would categorize my artifact in Religion, because a funeral mask is part of the ritual of death.
