Tepexi Tepexi el Viejo fungió como cabecera de uno de los señoríos popolacas más importantes que controlaron el sur de lo que ahora es el estado de Puebla durante el periodo Postclásico (1200-1500 d.C.), este pueblo mantuvo estrecho contacto con Teotihuacan, pues fueron los popolacas los productores de la cerámica "anaranjado delgado" que era comercializada por la gran urbe. Esta fortificación presenta cinco áreas, sobre los que se emplazan las plataformas, montículos piramidales, zonas residenciales, atalayas y tumbas.
