What is Jericho Road? Where are we? How can other churches participate?
1. What is Jericho Road? • Jericho Road bridges communities by matching the professional talents of volunteers with the needs of nonprofit organizations in Dallas, to: • promote community development, • strengthen social services, and • enrich the lives of volunteers. • Jericho Road Project Mission Statement
Communities in Need Non-Profits SkilledVolunteers • Jericho Road will: • Connect our church with the broader community. • Create meaningful volunteer opportunities. • Strengthen area nonprofit organizations. • Increase the visibility of Unitarian Universalism
Inspiration for Jericho Road On April 4, 1967, Martin Luther King preached a sermon, calling people to play the Good Samaritan as they walk life’s roads. But Dr. King urged us all to recognize that unless we change the whole road to Jericho, in a systemic manner, men and women will continue to be beaten and robbed as they make their journey along life’s highway. “True compassion,” he said, “is more than flinging a coin to a beggar; it is not haphazard and superficial. It comes to see that an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring.” The Jericho Road Project is about that restructuring.
A Short History of Jericho Road • Started 2003 by First Parish Concord Unitarian; led by business people and ministers. • Started out of a desire to affect systemic social change and engage new parishioners in social action. • Complemented existing social action programming focused on alleviating symptoms of poverty (lack of clothing, food, shelter). • Has expanded to include: • Other faith-based volunteer pools; • Corporate Partners; and, • Other Communities.
