First Year Advising Center (FYAC) • Stemmed from action project focused on the experience of entering students (the AQIP First Year Experience Project) • Based on findings by the Higher Learning Commission and SENSE, Survey of Entering Student Engagement • Student perceptions – difficult to immediately engage with college due to Sinclair’s large size and diversity of student body • Unclear pathways • Little is mandatory – much is up to student (students don’t do options) • Poor student tracking of goals • Differences in student success for those who participated in orientation and advising • Entering students require more meaningful and engaging contact with professional staff or faculty • Sinclair converting from quarter to semester system Fall 2012 • AQIP First Year Experience Project began January 2011 and was comprised of 3 teams working in the following areas: New Student Orientation, Gatekeeper Courses, and Academic Advising
FYAC Preparation for Launch • Sub committees formed: • Training • Week 1: Getting to know the college departments & resources • Week 2: Degree & certificate programs • Week 3: Online advising tools & resources • Week 4: Academic advising concepts, processes and procedures • Advising Resources • Session Content • Logistics • Smooth transition from Enrollment Services (placement testing) • Determined case management approach • New Academic Advisors started 7-5-11 • FYAC opened to see students 8-8-11
