“Chariots of Fire” 2 Kings 2
Chariots of Fire What would you do if you knew you were going to die today? What would say to you loved ones? 3 Things I would say to our children: Take care of your mother, Love each other and Serve Jesus Christ forever.
I. Elijah’s last Day v. 1-7 • Elijah’s journey has taken him from the mountains, to standing before the King, to the brook at Cherith, to the widow of Zarephath, Mt. Carmel, desert, cave on Mt. Horeb to standing before Ahaziah • Elisha’s response to Elijah’s words of “stay here” demonstrates his loyalty. • Ruth 1:16-18 – “Where you go I will go…where you stay….your people…your God…only death separates us. • Elijah is not afraid – his life has been and is now in God’s hands.
II. Elijah’s Last Words v. 8-12 • Elijah’s question, “What can I do for you.” – test of of priorities. Elisha’s response – v. 9 – reflection of priorities. • “Double portion” does not mean twice as much, but is best understood against backdrop of Elisha being the spiritual son of Elijah and desiring to be spiritual successor. • If you “see me” v. 10 as compared to v. 12 “Elisha saw this” • “seeing” is a “spiritual seeing” as a result of God’s spirit giving us understanding of spiritual truths that are not understandable without his opening our “eyes.” • Ephesians 1:18
Seeing the Invisible • Hebrews 11:27 – “preserved because he saw him who is invisible.” – How do you see that which is invisible? • Faith sees what is really there even though others see nothing at all. • Just because we can’t see something doesn’t mean it isn’t there. ie. Electricity, 3-D pictures • The “hidden world” of eternal reality is there whether we see it or not.
Seeing the Invisible (cont.) • We can not argue people into the Kingdom – our logic will not destroy their experience. • We must pray – pray that God opens the eyes of their heart. Ephesians 1:17 • Remember that Satan blinds the minds of unbelievers (2 Corinthians 4:4). • How do we know Elisha could “see” with spiritual sight? – 2 Kings 6:8-17 • When your eyes are open you understand (see) that the unseen world is the real world.
III. Elijah’s Lasting Legacy v.13-14 • The church triumphant rejoices while the church militant on earth continues the battle. • Elisha’s question: “Where is the Lord, the God of Elijah?” • Where is the God of Elijah, Luther, Hudson Taylor, Jim Elliott? • While Elijah has left the scene – the Lord has not left – and he raises up others. • God’s work goes on because God goes on.
Conclusion • Nothing of God dies when a man dies. • We come and go, but God spans the generations – Psalm 100:5; Exodus 20:6 • Generations come and go – only God remains forever. • Where is the Lord God of Elijah – He is still here!
