The Mighty Giants The American Chestnut Tree
The American Chestnut Tree • Students will Develop an understanding of the effects of technology on the environment. • Students will develop and understanding and of and apply the engineering design process. • Students will develop an understanding of and be able to select and use agricultural and related bio technologies.
The Situation • The American Chesnutt tree a once Mighty Giant that covered the Application Mountains down the east coast is now all but extinct. From nearly four billion to an isolated few, what caused these Mighty Giants to fall? The answer DISEASE! An effort is being made by many including us to try and revive these great trees. STEM (Science, Technology, and Engineering & Math) along with Carroll County Outdoor School is trying to help the American Chesnutt tree grow and survive.
The Design Brief • You are the Technology part of the STEM initiative to help the chestnut tree survive. Your Challenge is to learn what happened to the trees and when. Discover what tree tubes are and innovate their design utilizing prodesktop. Develop a brochure explaining about the American chestnut tree and how your tree tube design could be implemented at Outdoor School.
Requirements • Challenge redefined • Answer all research questions • Utilize Prodesktop to innovate the design of a tree tube. • Develop the brochure • Share your brochure with the class
