It’s Our Party And We’ll Cry If We Want To The two big parties in British Politics are clearly Labourand the Conservatives. It has been this way for the past 100 years and will probably continue to do so. Between them they polled 65.1% (19,336,141 votes) in the 2010 General Election. If You then add the 3rd Party the Liberal Democrats then the figure goes up to 88.1% (26,172,965 votes). What this essentially means is that the 3 biggest parties have a monopoly of support amongst the UK Public. If any party is to have any real chance of breaking this monopoly then they must have wealthy backers, mass support and a highly developed local and national structure. Of all the major fringe parties none of them fit this bill!
Activity 2 Maybe in your evaluation you felt that no party covered all the things you felt were most important. Using the sheet on the next slide create your own party! Task: In pairs give it a name and come up with some things you would like to change! Extension: Include how you think we could create a fairer system for voting in the UK! We will move onto this in following sessions.
Mini Plenary- What are these documents? Questions too! How do I make sure I can vote? • Make sure your name is on the Electoral Register for your area. This is a list of everyone who can vote. • You can contact your local council to make sure you are on this list. • The council will send you a card just before an election. This is called a polling card. • The card tells you where and when to vote. Collect in votes too!
Plenary- Progress… Inspiration for WWW/EBI (Pick 2 questions and answer in WWW/EBI). Did you learn about the political parties? Can you explain their policies? Did you listen well? Did you complete all work? Did you evaluate your ideas? (Look at strengths and weaknesses) SPaG? This term we are going to check our progress slightly differently!
