  1. Source B shows that are not accepting foreign blue-collar workers because they see them as violating the a laws / they are given privileges. (Give evidence/explain)

  2. There appears to be some truth in this because there have been complaints about foreign workers congregating in Little India and causing traffic jams because of their disregard for traffic laws. This has caused some residents to complain to the authorities.

  3. However the reliability is questionable because the source is from an individual which shows his own perspective and judging from the tone, his purpose is to criticize the foreign workers for disregarding laws so that the authorities would tighten up regulations against them.

  4. Source D also shows that Singaporeans are not accepting foreign blue-collar workers because they pose a threat to their personal security. (Give evidence, explain)

  5. There, may be, some truth in this because some Singaporeans have voiced their concern for safety when foreign workers hang out in large groups. For example, when Thai workers hung out around Golden Mile area residents complained about their fears.

  6. However, the reliability of this source can be called to question because it is the opinion of an individual whose purpose is to condemn the decision to house foreign workers around her estate so that the government would be persuaded to not carry out the plans.

  7. Source C, on the other hand, shows that Singaporeans do accept the blue-collar foreign workers because they contribute to Singapore’s infrastructure / economy

  8. There appears to be some truth in this because it is supported by Source A which states that the foreign workers help in our development. (Give evidence / explain)

  9. However, the reliability is questionable because the source is the view of an individual who aims to support the governments’ decision but who may not have experienced living near foreign workers.

  10. To answer the question, Source D is the most reliable to prove that Singaporeans are not accepting foreign blue-collar workers because the issue in focus is on dormitories being built near Serangoon Gardens and Source D is a resident there. This implies that Source D has the experience of interaction with foreign workers which has brought about this response. In addition, Source A, which is a statement by a Minister is aware that Singaporeans are not accepting foreign workers and so is justifying their reasons for housing foreign workers near residential areas so that Singaporeans would accept the decision.

  11. To answer the question, the answer is a divided one based on perspective. For those who see the foreign blue-collar workers as essential to the economy, they welcome them because of the contributions they make. This is revealed in Sources C and A, where the Minister explains the need for foreign workers because of their contributions to the economy.

  12. However to those who see them as threat to their safety and disruption to their peace and lifestyle, the workers are not welcomed. This is evident in Sources B and D. Thus, whether Singaporeans accept the blue-collar foreign workers depends on the perspective of the individual or body.
