LISA current status • LISA was formally approved as a cornerstone mission of • ESA’s Horzion 2000+ programme • It was required to be a 50%-50% collaboration with NASA • LISA programme includes LPF • LISA’s launch date is in standby, as LPF results are needed • before is authorised to fly • In addition, NASA is applying budgetary cuts, mostly in view • of its new exploration priorities (Bush, 2004) • Still, an industrial formulation phase is currently underway • at Dornier Satellitensysteme, under ESA contract Conclusion is: LPF is paramount, every effort must be applied to doing it Appec Spain, IFAE 2-vi-2006
LPF Appec Spain, IFAE 2-vi-2006
LISA’s requirements are extremely demanding. Drag free subsystem can not be fully tested on Earth. A previous, smaller technology mission, will assess feasibility: LISA PathFinder (formerly SMART-2) LPF It will carry on board the LTP. However it will be in a smaller scale, both in size and sensitivity. • Essentially, LTP will check: • drag free technology • picometre interferometry • other important subsystems and software Appec Spain, IFAE 2-vi-2006
LTP Objectives: • Drag-free • Interferometry • Other… 30 cm LTP concept 1. One LISA arm is squeezed to 30 centimetres: 2.Relax sensitivity by one order of magnitude, also in band: Appec Spain, IFAE 2-vi-2006

Future prospects Ultimate goal is of course to see GWs and do Physics with them... • For this, we envisage two major steps: • LISA PathFinder • Complete undertaken duties • Team-build, much stress on engineer component • LISA • Look forward to an even stronger involvement in • mission definition and construction, both hardware • and science matters. • First hand access to science yield.
