History of the Radio • Invented in Italy by Guglielmo Marconi in 1895 • First called the radiotelegraph • In 1904 the U.S. started to build radio broadcasting stations to link the nation • Early radio only included weather, news, and stock market conditions • 1912: Sinking of the Titanic • 1914 signals were amplified for the general public. • Nonmilitary broadcasting was banned during WWI due to fear of espionage

  4. History of the Radio • After WWI: Companies mass market the radio and they start becoming common in the average household • Westinghouse Electric Co. (CBS) established the first commercially owned radio station to offer a schedule for public listening. • It was played from a roof of the CBS corporation • Played different types of programming including music and entertaining shows. • Has no fees or commercial advertisement. • Other companies join: GE, RCA and NBC in 1926. • Starts in big cities

History of the Radio • AT&T was the first company to charge for advertisements to make money • First commercial took place in 1922 • Describe Commercials Today: What is their purpose? • 1922 over 60,000 households had radios and by 1929 over 10 million. • Radio stations ran on their own using commercials as their means of payment without government interference. • In the 1920’s radio was evolving into a means of creating a popular culture across the nation • By the 1930’s radio could be heard all over the US • 1934: 600 radio stations were broadcasting to over 20 million listeners. • Primary source for news and entertainment.
