What is a river? • Marvin has just arrived from Mars. Can you explain to Marvin what a river is?
A river is not just the channel with the water in it • It includes the floodplains that have water on them sometimes
Measuring depth • Easy to get into a little stream and measure, but what if the river is deeper?
Measuring Width • Easy to get into a little stream and measure, but what if the river is wider?
Measuring velocity (current) • I measure the depth using a turboprop, very expensive. How else can we measure river velocity?
Small beasties We collect the beasties and put them on a tray to identify, what do they mean?
What do they mean? • Presence of high oxygen demanding species mean very clean water • Presence of low oxygen demanding species mean polluted water
