Opening • Hester Prynne wants to tell Dimmsdale of Chillingsworths real identity. • So knowing that he will walk in the forest coming home from a Native American tribe Hester sets out and waits to meet him.
Observations • Pearl seems to notice that the sunshine avoids Hester. • Hester notices that Pearl believes that she to will eventually have a mark on her chest.
Questions • Pearl asks Hester to explain to her about the “black Man” • Pearl has already heard that he roams the forest with a book in chains filled with peoples signatures. • Also with the signature he leaves a mark upon the person • Pearl asks Hester if the A on her chest was the “black Man’s” mark on her.
The Answer • Hester tells Pearl that she has signed the book. • And the A is the mark that the “Black Man has left upon her”
Arrival • Dimmsdale approaching Pearl asks if he is the “Black Man” • Hester says no and tells Peals that it is the minister • Pearl points out that he is clutching his chest • Pearl then asks why he does not bear a mark such as Hester, not knowing of his rash. • Pearl also asks if the “Black Man” has left his mark on Dimmsdales heart for he is always clutching it
Foreshadowing • Pearl says she does not have a mark yet. • Pearl asks if Dimmsdale is the “Black Man”
