Warm-Up: Key Terms • Define the key terms on p. 456 • Chordate • Notochord • Vertebra • Ectotherm • Endotherm
Characteristics of Chordates • Notochord • Nerve cord in back • Slits in throat area
Characteristics of Vertebrates • Vertebrae • Spinal cord • Internal skeleton called an endoskeleton • Backbone • Skull • Ribs • limbs
Checking for Understanding • Look at Figure 3 on page 458 to answer the following questions: • From head to tail, what benefits does the endoskeleton offer? • How does an endoskeleton differ from an arthropod exoskeleton?
Answer: Checking for Understanding • From head to tail, what benefits does the endoskeleton offer? • Skull protects brain; ribs protect heart, lungs and other organs; muscles attach to bones; arm and legs bones adapted for movement; whole skeleton gives body shape • How does an endoskeleton differ from an arthropod exoskeleton? • Provides internal support and grows as the animal grows
Evolution of Vertebrates • Vertebrates probably evolved from an invertebrate chordate ancestor. • Evidence for this is obtained from fossils and DNA.
Keeping Conditions Stable • Body temperature: • Fishes, amphibians, and reptiles close to their environment • Birds and mammals warmer than their environment
Ectotherm • Fishes, amphibians, and reptiles • Often called “coldblooded”
Endotherm • Birds and mammals • Body temperature does not change much • Adaptations: • Fur or feathers • Sweat glands • Can live in a greater variety of environments than ectotherms can.
Checking for Understanding • On a cool, sunny morning, a Woma python raises its body temperature by bathing in the sun. In contrast, an emperor penguin stays warm by producing internal heat. Which animal is an endotherm?
Answer: Checking for Understanding • On a cool, sunny morning, a Woma python raises its body temperature by bathing in the sun. In contrast, an emperor penguin stays warm by producing internal heat. Which animal is an endotherm? • THE PENGUIN
