  2. WHAT IS A VERB? • The part of speech that expresses an ACTION, STATE or OCCURRENCE

  4. WHAT IS A VERB PHRASE? • A verb with another word or words indicating tense, mood or person.

  5. Examples of Verb Phrases • I could run. • He might run. • She did run. • They have run. • We were running. • It must be time to run.

  6. WHAT MAKES A STRONG VERB STRONG? • Creates a mental image— “parents pushing their children,” “students maneuvering around the rules,” “…chasing good grades by any means” • Not often used in everyday conversation • Only repeated for effect: I raced through my chores, raced to the box office to buy a ticket, raced home to change and raced to my friend’s house for a ride to the concert. I was exhausted but it was worth it to see Justin Bieber live at Shoreline.
