Evaluation of Effect of Combining SRI and UDP Practices on Performance of Lowland Rice in Kenya Wanjogu R.K, Machungo C, Owilla B. P, Njoka J.J. NIB RESEARCH WORKSHOP 13th & 14th June
System of Rice Intensification (SRI) • SRI - A set of farming practices developed to increase the productivity of land and water, as well as other resources. • SRI is based on intermittent irrigation, developing healthy, large and deep root systems that can better tolerate drought, water-logging and lodging.
SRI IN PRACTICE (PRINCIPLES) 1. Seedlings transplanted at a much younger age. (8-12 DAS) 2. Transplanting: Single seedling/ Hill
SRI Principles Cont. 3.Wider Spacing in a square pattern. (25 by 25 cm) 4.Intermittent water application to create wet and dry soil conditions Vs .flood irrigation.

OBJECTIVE • Evaluate the effectiveness of combining SRI and UDP Practices on growth and yield of lowland rice. Specific Objective • Evaluate the performance of different varieties under SRI/UDP combination • Determine the optimal spacing for the test varieties under SRI and UDP system
Methodology • Fertilizer treatments • 2.7gram Urea Super Granule • 1.8 gram Urea Super granule • Standard practice- Split application of SA • Varieties • Bas 370, IR 2793, BW 196 • Spacing • 20cm x 20cm : 25cmx25cm: 30cm x 30cm
Experimental Design • Factorial Experiment • Split –Split plot RCB Design • Fertilizer treatment- Main plot • Variety – Sub plot • Spacing – Sub- sub plot Factor Crop Management- As per SRI practice
Data Collection • Growth Plant height Tiller counts • Yield parameters Tiller counts at harvest – PT, NPT & TT Panicle data- FG, SG, TG & Sterility 1000 grain weight Yield Kg/Ha 14, 28, 42, 56 , 70 & 84DAT
Plant height (cm) BASMATI 370
CONCLUSION • The varieties responded differently to the treatments at the different spacings. • However, considering that previous UDP and SRI separate evaluations indicated cost advantage over the conventional method, the study need to be repeated in order to get conclusive findings.
