CHRIST, THE MAN OF SORROWS Isaiah 53:2-3 2For he grew up before him like a young plant,and like a root out of dry ground;he had no form or majesty that we should look at him,   and no beauty that we should desire him.3 He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. (1 Pet 2:22-25)

  4. CHRIST, THE MAN OF SORROWS Why “a man of sorrows acquainted with grief”? John 15:11  11These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. John 17:13  13But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves.

  5. CHRIST, THE MAN OF SORROWS Why “a man of sorrows acquainted with grief”? Examine three areas of Christ’s life: (1) Sorrow of being rejected (2) Sorrow for the sins of the Jews and His immediate disciples (3) Sorrows because of the suffering He had to experience

  6. CHRIST, THE MAN OF SORROWS I. Sorrow of being rejected >His reason for coming to earth Luke 19:9-10  9And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. 10For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost."

  7. CHRIST, THE MAN OF SORROWS I. Sorrow of being rejected >His reason for coming to earth >And His own rejected Him John 6:66-67   66 After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. 67So Jesus said to the Twelve, "Do you want to go away as well?"

Sorrow of being rejected John 5:17-18  17But Jesus answered them, "My Father is working until now, and I am working."  18This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God

Sorrow of being rejected John 11:33-35  33When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled. 34And he said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to him, "Lord, come and see." 35 Jesus wept.

It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to their playmates, 17"'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.‘ 18For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, 'He has a demon.' 19The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds."

Matthew 11:20-24  20 Then he began to denounce the cities where most of his mighty works had been done, because they did not repent. 21 "Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you. 23And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will be brought down to Hades. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. 24 But I tell you that it will be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom than for you.“

  13. CHRIST, THE MAN OF SORROWS II. Jesus sorrowed because of the sins of the Jews and His disciples. Matthew 15: 2-3 2 "Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat." 3He answered them, "And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? 7-9 7 You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said: 8 "'This people honors me with their lips,   but their heart is far from me;9 in vain do they worship me,   teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.'"

  14. CHRIST, THE MAN OF SORROWS II. Jesus sorrowed because of the sins of the Jews and His disciples. Matthew 23: 13 + 15  13"But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. For you neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in. 15Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel across sea and land to make a single proselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourselves. 27  27 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness.

Matthew 23:37   37 "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not!

  16. CHRIST, THE MAN OF SORROWS III. Did the Lord’s impending death fill His heart with sorrow? Hebrews 12:1-2   1Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

  17. CHRIST, THE MAN OF SORROWS III. Did the Lord’s impending death fill His heart with sorrow? Matthew 26:36-39   36 Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, "Sit here, while I go over there and pray." 37And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38Then he said to them, "My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me." 39And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, "My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will."

  18. CHRIST, THE MAN OF SORROWS III. Did the Lord’s impending death fill His heart with sorrow? John 10:16-18 16And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. 17 For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father."

CHRIST, THE MAN OF SORROWS Jeremiah - often called “the weeping prophet” Jeremiah 13:15-17  15Hear and give ear; be not proud,for the LORD has spoken. 16 Give glory to the LORD your God before he brings darkness, before your feet stumble on the twilight mountains, and while you look for light he turns it into gloom and makes it deep darkness. 17But if you will not listen, my soul will weep in secret for your pride; my eyes will weep bitterly and run down with tears, because the LORD’s flock has been taken captive.

  20. CHRIST, THE MAN OF SORROWS Jeremiah, often called “the weeping prophet.” Lamentations 1:12  12"Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by?    Look and seeif there is any sorrow like my sorrow,   which was brought upon me,which the LORD inflicted   on the day of his fierce anger.

  21. CHRIST, THE MAN OF SORROWS Don’t cause Jesus to weep tonight because of your sins, but rather obey
