WASEX Concept • WASEX: • A “War at Sea Exercise” to practice and/or rehearse a sustained large scale live maneuver • Mission: • Protect the Strike Group from OPFOR Surface Action Group conducting blockade and anti-ship operations for 48 hour window within a defined, high density battle space during RIMPAC Force Integration Training Phase
WASEX Concept (cont) • Mission Objective: • Find, Fix, Track, Target enemy surface formations, and threat aircraft in order to ensure no blue losses while ESG conducts air and surface operations • Purpose: • Demonstrate resolve in supporting and protecting regional allies and friends while exercising freedom of navigation in international waters IAW international law and RIMPAC ROE
WASEX Construct • War at Sea Exercise • ESG v SAG • CESG assumes CTF 176 duties and reports to MOC • Strike group is free to maneuver as required • Generic Air-to-Surface, Surface-to-Surface, IAW RIMPAC Order of Battle • Dynamic Targeting (DT) / Time Sensitive Targeting (TST) as required • One, continuous 60 hour event • Force Integration Training (FIT) Phase
WASEX Constraints • CSG/ESG concurrently conducting WASEX • CSG/ESG concurrently conducting TASWEX • Geography divides southern Air and Sea Space along the central HWY • RIMPAC schedule does not allow for slides • CSG TASWEX immediately following WASEX • ESG PHOTOEX immediately following WASEX

WASEX Assumptions • Land based air assets will be available to support WASEX requirements • Blue air forces will desire USN capable big-wing aerial refueling • Orange air forces will require USAF capable big-wing aerial refueling • Orange air fixed-wing aircraft will be land based • Orange SAG will come from ESG CTF • Orange air rotary-wing aircraft will be organic to OPFOR SAG
