Muon Upgrade Meeting (14.4.10) – P. Campana • Since our last discussion : • CB decision to prepare a LOI for an Upgrade of LHCb (approx 100 pages, 10 for the Muon System, ready by the end of 2010) • a “brainstorming meeting” on L0 and ODE Muon electronics ( Caterina) • some preliminary studies on muon-id at high lumi ( Sara) • Today: • Discuss and prepare the outline of the contents of the Muon chapter • Start general discussion on ideas/statements/strategy from the Muon group and from the Laboratories involved
What about other SD (from Upgrade Leader Meeting 10.2.10) VELO Quite well organized and running Strong interests and committments (UK, Syracuse, Nikhef, ...) Options: strips or pixel (preferred) counting on several R&D (MediPix, SLHC, ILC) $$ status: UK application not financed, a sizeable R&D grant to US group Tracking Simulations suggest to increase granularity in the inner region (x4 in silicon area) Technically and moneywise not easy (rise the inner part of OT?) 40 MHz FEE would oblige to rebuild IT High granularity could be obtained with thin fiber tracker (Lausanne, Dortmund) 40 MHz FEE is doable in OT, but inner part could suffer from high occupancy (30-40%): substitute the central part with thick fiber tracker (R&D in Frascati) ? Nikhef & Heidelberg showed interest in 40 MHz FEE for OT No committments on the rest
RICH 40 MHz = replacement of PM and electronics Several groups are active (Milano, Genova, Edinburgh) Choice of PM under way (multi anode Hamamatsu), R&D on readout chip (the same of Velo?) TORCH, SuperRich, nice ideas, but irrealistic for the time being CALO Project of new readout boards at 40 MHz well underway Issue on radiation resistance of PM & inner modules not yet solved Pileup could be important (inner region = higher granularity) Electronics General coordination of activities Tell40 and GBT link quite advanced Studies ongoing on ADC chip Online General consensus that a farm digesting 40 MHz (2TB/s, 2,000 links and 4,000 CPU) is not a problem...(!)
Why a LOI • to set the point of view of LHCb to the CERN management • to give a perspective to LHCb after “phase 1” (6 fb-1?) • to mantain alive LHCb technical resources inside the LABs • to start the process of funding • >> to make clearer to ourselves the meaning of upgrade << • to understand the committments of LABs • When (the upgrade) • It has been said (CB and elsewhere) 2016 • Nobody knows the LHC plans (they may change) • Many of us believe that 2016 is unreasonable for a full upgrade • (VELO and 40 MHz everywhere): one could go in steps • Personal point of view – 2 weakness • Several years ago, LHCb committed to FA for 10 fb-1 - Already now, people speaks of upgrade after 6 fb-1 - I can imagine the reactions when asking for money • GDP are for the time being out (I hope to be wrong) for NP: everything is on LHCb shoulders. What if we see nothing (and we rule out faint FNAL NP signals) ?
LOI Muon Chapter outline • It should reflect our understanding of Muon system propagating low lumi (real) data • Ageing of detectors (not only due to radiation) • Rate problems in inner regions • Compatibility of ODE/ECS electronics with the rest of the world • Performances of the detector (mu-id, background, noise, etc...) • Can we do better (eg. de-striping the pads) ? • And • how much would cost the various options • who (and under which conditions) would do them • Note: several groups are committing for the R&D, not necessarly for the (real) upgrade. This is a general feeling and somehow should be reflected in the wording of LOI
