Year 8 Interior Design E-Portfolio. This a folio template for you to use in the production of your work. It’s job is to help you tell the story of your work, how you have done it & what you have learnt. Each page has instructions on it for you to follow. If the instructions are in black they should be left on the page, if they are in red they can be deleted once the work is complete. Remember the job of a folio is to allow another person to understand what & why you have done things without talking to you. So it’s the detail that counts so if your need to add more slides do so!
Design Brief & Analysis. You are now a professional interior designer. You are entering a design for an exhibition based on domestic interiors. You are to make a small scale model of your final design to present at the exhibition. The interior can be for any room in the house but it must be inspired by a recognised design style i.e. Memphis, Art Deco, etc. What style of design am I going to use ? How am I going to make my room ? What colour scheme I am going to use? What do I need to find out about or decide upon? What will the size of my room be ? What materials I am going to use? What room I am going to do ? What am I going to make my room out of ? What will I put in the room ?
Research – Design Movement. I have decide to research into the Art deco design movement. I have decided this because they use bright colours and I would like my room to be bright. Also art deco consists of lots of interesting shapes an patterns which I think will look good in my room. I also think art deco looks interesting and I would like my room to look interesting.
Research – Model Making Techniques. Glue- I am going to use PVA glue to make my model because it is not solvent based and it will stick the things I want on. I am going to use glue to stick the wall paper on. Scissors- I am going to use scissors to cut things out to put in my room. I will use them to cut the wall paper out and other objects I will use in my room. For health and safety I will carry them held to me faced down. Wallpaper- I an going to use wallpaper in my room to make it look nice and colourful. I will use an art deco style wallpaper to keep the theme in my room. I will use glue to stick my wallpaper onto my room.

The desk/draws will have 3 draws on one side and one on the other to create a storage space and study area in the room. The chair is so you can sit down on the desk to enable you to do the work. The rug will be turquoise and it will lie on a white floor. The lights are in a suitable place were the light will get to all of the room. The window is in a position where nothing is under it and will let the light in to the room. Light Bed
Product Development. For my room I am going to stick to an art deco theme, as that is my chosen design movement. I chose it because I know more about it than other design movements I could have chosen. My bed is going to take up most of the room as I have chosen to make a double four poster bed. Most of my furniture is going to be brown, as it is a popular art deco colour to use. A lot of turquoise is going to be used because I like the colour and it is the colour scheme I have chosen to follow. The lights are going to be in a suitable place where the room will be well lit up and bright.
Diary Day 1: I went to Home Base to choose a suitable ,art deco, styled wallpaper to use in my bed room model. Day 2: I printed off some art deco posters and a window. Day 3:I started off painting my bed poles with dark brown paint. I then covered my box, that I used to make my bed, in white card, so the printing on the box would not show through the white cotton. I then put the white cotton on the box, and sewed a cushion and duvet for the bed, using coloured cotton , I stuffed them, with stuffing, to make them look more realistic. After that I made a white throw to go over the bed with white cotton. Next I drew around the outside of the box to get the correct measurements, for the wallpaper, cut the wallpaper out then stuck it around the box using glue. For the carpet I did the same, except I used white felt and stuck it in. Finally I created a mirror by cutting a rectangle out of white card and cutting a smaller rectangle out of tin foil, I then stuck them together, shinny side up. Day 4 : Firstly I stuck the painted lolly sticks to the bed. I then cut out a circle, with scissors, in turquoise felt to make the big rug in the middle of the room. Next I painted 4 match boxes, with dark brown paint, and cut out the pieces I needed to make the desk/draws, out of card, I then painted them with dark brown paint two. While the paint was drying I cut out some net , for the top of the bed and stuck it on with glue. After that I used blue and gold paint to paint some paper straws, which would soon be the lights. During the period of time the paint was drying I cut out all the posters and window and stuck them around my room, including the mirror. Then I cut out two curtain shapes out of fabric and used glue to stick them on by the window. When the brown paint had dried I assembled the desk/draws together, adding tin foil knobs, by scrunching up tinfoil and sticking them on. Soon after I cut the paper straws to the right length and stuck them on some white card I had cut out earlier. I then cut out some wood (lolly sticks) and stuck them together, with glue to make a chair. For the chair I then sewed a small turquoise cushion together and stuffed it with stuffing. The chair needed legs so u screwed up some tinfoil and stuck them on the bottom of the chair. Once the glue had dried on the wall lights I stuck them, with glue along the walls of my modal room. Day 5: On the last day I firstly chose a brown pipe cleaner and cut it to the correct length, using scissors. After that I cut out a rectangle of white card and stuck it together with glue. I then cut out a circle base for the light. After covering the pieces in glue I covered the lamp shade with gold glitter, and only covered the outside of the base in glitter. Once I had stuck the light together I arranged my room and took photos of it.
Changes I have made… The chair: instead of using cardboard and stuffing the chair with stuffing I made it out of wood and made a cushion for it. I needed to do this so it would match my other furniture and because I did not have the right materials for it. Desk/draws: Instead of having hole slots at the end of my desk I used match boxes to create draws. I did this because realistically all the things would fall out of the holes. Wall lights: I planned to make my wall lights lots of different colours. Now I have made them with two colours. I did this because I needed a colour scheme and loads of colours would have looked weird. Lamp: I was going to use lots of coloured sequins to decorate my lamp shade. But instead I used gold glitter to decorate it because I needed to follow a colour scheme.
Future Development. I worked well using technical language, and I also came up with a variety of ideas for my work. My final work was neat and well laid out. My work was presented in a clear and easy way to read and understand. My room model followed a colour scheme so the room rooked neat I followed the art deco theme. Use better materials for my room model. Use colour making my ideas for my furniture and lighting. Peer asses (my sister) Good use of colour The handles on the desk/draws Make the poles on the bed smaller If I was to do this homework again I would make the poles on the bed smaller and I would also colour my ideas in (initial ideas pages).
