Major Event and Festival Impacts Seminar 7: Sustainability and Events
Main Lessons from the Lecture • Sustainability is a term often associated with the environment although its meaning is actually more wide reaching • It can therefore refer to economic, social and environmental aspects of events • In order to develop a sustainable event a balance must be gained between these elements of the triple bottom line • Sustainable events management is concerned with managing all aspects of the event – it must be planned and also involves post event legacy • The environment is a key aspect of sustainability that we have not looked at in previous lectures • Many new rules and guidelines exist surrounding the environmental impact of events
Debate • In recent years the issue of sustainability and events has risen in prominence. Some would argue that this is wholly positive however, it could also be argued that this is simply a clever marketing tool that taps into consumer’s ethical ethos and externaliseslabour onto the consumer. • Group One will argue that the sustainable management practices introduced at T in the Park are a positive thing • Group Two will argue that these practices are simply driven by commercial imperatives
