  1. A YRAC PRESENTATION THANKYOU FOR COMING HOPE YOU WILL TAKE SOMETHINGHOME

  2. FOSTERING FAMILY HEALTH DEVELOPMENT WITH ICTs A YRAC PRESENTATION Presented by: MAGARET T. UDOH (MRS) FOUNDER YOUTH REFORMATION AND AWARENESS CENTRE

  3. INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY OR ICT, IS OFTEN USED AS AN EXTENDED SYNONYM FOR INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (IT) INTRODUCTION TO ICT

  4. THE TERM ICT REFERS TO THE CONVERGENCE OF AUDIO-VISUAL AND TELEPHONE NETWORKS WITH COMPUTER NETWORKS THROUGH A SINGLE CABLING OR LINK SYSTEM. INTRODUCTION TO ICT

  5. The computer is a machine used to solve our problems. Therefore communication between computers and the outside world is very important. Imagine you communicating with the computer in one language you both understand. This will make work a lot better.

  6. HEALTH IS THE LEVEL OF FUNCTIONAL OR METABOLIC EFFICIENCY OF A LIVING ORGANISM. IN HUMANS, IT IS THE GENERAL CONDITION OF A PERSON'S MIND AND BODY, USUALLY MEANING TO BE FREE FROM ILLNESS, INJURY OR PAIN. • HEALTH INCLUDES PHYSICAL AND MENTAL WELL-BEING OF AN INDIVIDUAL • HEALTH IS AFFECTED BY THE ENVIRONMENT, THEREFORE, FOR A PERSON TO BE FULLY HEALTHY, THE SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT MUST BE SAME WHAT IS HEALTH?

  7. WORLD SUMMIT ON INFORMATION SOCIETY (WSIS) PROMOTES THE USE OF ICTS TO FACILITATE ACCESS TO THE WORLD’S MEDICAL KNOWLEDGE, IMPROVE COMMON INFORMATION SYSTEMS, IMPROVE AND EXTEND HEALTH CARE AND HEALTH INFORMATION SYSTEMS TO REMOTE AREAS, AND PROVIDE MEDICAL AND HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE DURING DISASTERS AND EMERGENCIES. HEALTH INFORMATION

  8. FAMILY IS A GROUP OF PEOPLE LIVING TOGETHER AND FUNCTIONING AS A SINGLE HOUSEHOLD, USUALLY CONSISTING OF PARENTS AND THEIR CHILDREN • SOME FAMILIES EXTEND MEMBERSHIP TO OTHERS AS, GRAND PARENTS, UNCLES/ AUNTS, COUSINS, NIECES AND NEPHEWS WHAT IS A FAMILY

  9. COMPUTER, LAPTOPS, MOBILE AND TABLE PHONES, SOFT & HARD WARES • TELEVISION SETS, RADIO, DVDs, VCDs, MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS • LITERACY AND SELF-DEVELOPMENT/ GROWTH BOOKS, NEWSPAPERS & BULLETINS, MAGAZINES, ELECTRONIC TOYS AND CDS; GAMES ETC. FAMILY ICT IMPLEMENTS

  10. The world has gone global due to the rate of development of Information and communication Technology (ICT) • In order to be relevant in the 21st century, individuals, families, organisations, schools, banks etc. have to adapt and become computer literate • Every child or adult needs computer literacy to fit into the global trend. IMPORTANCE OF FAMILY COMPUTER LITERACY 1

  11. COMPUTER LITERACY IS THE ABILITY TO USE COMPUTER PROGRAMS EFFECTIVELY • COMPUTER SKILLS ACQUISITION IS IMPORTANT AND LIFE SUCCESS DEPENDS ON THE TECHNOLOGY IMPORTANCE OF FAMILY COMPUTER LITERACY 2

  12. ICTS AID IN COLLABORATIVE EFFORTS TO CREATE A RELIABLE, TIMELY, HIGH QUALITY AND AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE AND HEALTH INFORMATION SYSTEMS, AND TO PROMOTE CONTINUOUS MEDICAL TRAINING, EDUCATION, AND RESEARCH IMPORTANCE OF FAMILY COMPUTER LITERACY 3

  13. The growing field of information and communication technology (ICT) can play an integral part in supporting the efforts to address family health issues. The term “e Health” was coined to describe the combined use of electronic communication and information technology in the health sector FAMILY BENEFITS OF ICTS

  14. “In a broader sense, e Health characterizes not only a technical development, but also a new way of working, an attitude, and a commitment for networked, global thinking, to improve health care locally, regionally, and worldwide by using information and communication technology” (Pagliari 2005). Mobile technologies have the capacity to improve access to family health information and services for parents and children, with the view to bettering both health status and quality of life. FAMILY BENEFITS OF ICTS

  15. THOSE DAYS HEALTH INFORMATION WAS CANTERED AROUND HOSPITALS AND OTHER HEALTH CENTRES. THERE IS A COMMON QUESTION AS: ARE YOU A DOCTOR OR NURSE? WHEN PEOPLE FIND A NON-MEDICAL PERSON THAT IS WELL INFORMED ON HEALTH ISSUES. ENLIGHTENED PEOPLE HAVE ACCESS TO HEALTH INFORMATION ALMOST LIKE THE PROFESSIONALS. THE DIFFERENCE LIES IN THOSE FAMILIES THAT ARE NOT ICT FRIENDLY. FAMILY BENEFITS OF ICTS

  16. ICTS CAN AID IN COLLABORATIVE EFFORTS TO CREATE A RELIABLE, TIMELY, HIGH QUALITY AND AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE AND HEALTH INFORMATION SYSTEMS, AND TO PROMOTE CONTINUOUS MEDICAL TRAINING, EDUCATION, AND RESEARCH. ICTS BENEFITS

  17. The cost of technology is less than the benefit it creates. If the technology provision is not followed by the intention to learn then it can be high cost rather than cost reducing. • Technology bears negative effects if it is misused, for example to access pornography and other unhealthy sites. Such a misuse of ICT is a negative effect of technology. FAMILY BENEFITS OF ICTS

  18. TELEPHONE AND OTHER COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES HAVE BEEN GROSSLY MISUSED RECENTLY BY CHILDREN IN FAMILIES • SOME CONCERNED PARENTS ARE TORN BETWEEN PROVIDING THEM TO CHILDREN OR NOT • CHILDREN SHOULD BE GIVEN THE BASIC SET THAT THEY NEED FOR COMMUNICATION, THEY SHOULD WORK FOR THE MORE SOPHISTICATED ONES HOW FAMILY HEALTH CAN BE FOSTERED BY ICT

  19. TELEPHONES ARE NECESSARY FOR FAMILIES BECAUSE OF THE CURRENT GLOBAL TREND • CHILDREN CAN BE REACHED EASILY BY PARENTS AND OTHER ADULTS • INCASE OF EMERGENCIES, CHILDREN CAN CALL FOR HELP EASILY HOW FAMILY HEALTH CAN BE FOSTERED BY ICT

  20. BENEFITS OF MUSIC TRAINING IN CHILDREN SINGING AND PLAYING MUSIC TO BABIES HELP THEM TO DEVELOP LOVE FOR MUSIC AND MATHEMATICS: PIANO STUDENTS CAN UNDERSTAND MATHEMATICAL AND SCIENTIFIC CONCEPTS MORE READILY.  HOW FAMILY HEALTH CAN BE FOSTERED BY ICT

  21. CHILDREN WHO RECEIVED PIANO TRAINING PERFORMED 34% HIGHER ON TESTS MEASURING PROPORTIONAL REASONING – RATIOS, FRACTIONS, PROPORTIONS, AND THINKING IN SPACE AND TIME (NEUROLOGICAL RESEARCH, 1997).  HOW FAMILY HEALTH CAN BE FOSTERED BY ICT

  22. LEARNING MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS ALSO INVOLVES INTERPRETING NOTES AND MUSICAL SYMBOLS THAT THE BRAIN SEES TO FORM MELODIES - A SERIES OF SOUNDS THAT VARY WITH TIME.  MUSIC MAKING THEREFORE ENHANCES THE BRAIN’S “HARD-WIRING” FOR THE ABILITY TO VISUALIZE AND TRANSFORM OBJECTS IN SPACE AND TIME.  HOW FAMILY HEALTH CAN BE FOSTERED BY ICT

  23. BENEFITS OF MUSIC TRAINING IN CHILDREN • ALSO, LEARNING TO PLAY MUSIC DEVELOPS DISCIPLINE THAT IS BENEFICIAL TO ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT. • "MUSIC LESSONS INVOLVE MANY DIFFERENT FACETS, SUCH AS MEMORIZING, EXPRESSING EMOTION, LEARNING ABOUT MUSICAL INTERVAL AND CHORDS. THE MULTIDIMENSIONAL NATURE OF THE EXPERIENCE MAY ALSO HAVE A MOTIVATING EFFECT TO THE IQ OF THE CHILDREN" SCHULENBURG, G, N. OF THE UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO AT MISSISSAUGA. (UDOH, M.T. 2011, PARENTING MILESTONES) HOW TO ENHANCE POSITIVE FAMILY HEALTH THROUGH ICTS

  24. CHILDREN SHOULD BE DIRECTED TO USE THEIR TIME RIGHT • CHILDREN SHOULD BE DISCOVERED EARLY TO UNDERSTAND THEIR STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES • A FOCUSSED CHILD WILL NOT WASTE TIME TO BROWSE UNHEALTHY SITES OR ENGAGE IN UNPRODUCTIVE CONVERSATIONS • ANY ICT TECHNOLOGY PROVIDED FOR THE FAMILY SHOULD BE GIVEN GUIDELINES ON THE OPERATION AND PURPOSE OF USE; REWARD AND PENALTY SHOULD BE INCLUSIVE AND THEY SHOULD BE DULY IMPLEMENTED HOW TO ENHANCE POSITIVE FAMILY HEALTH THROUGH ICTS

  25. CHILDREN AND OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS SHOULD BE GIVEN SECURITY AWARENESS TRAINING AND THE USE OF SECURITY ELECTRONIC DEVICES THAT ARE INSTALLED IN THE HOUSE • EXAMPLES ARE: SURVEILLANCE CAMERA, MOBILE PHONES WITH GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM AND CAMERA, WRIST WATCHES WITH CAMERA, WHISTLE, CHIPS, ALARMS ETC. • EMERGENCY PHONE NUMBERS (FIRE, POLICE, AND FAMILY PHYSICIAN), PARENTS AND OTHER CLOSE FAMILY AND FRIENDS’ NUMBERS. HOW TO ENHANCE POSITIVE FAMILY HEALTH THROUGH ICTS

  26. FAMILY LIBRARY • LIBRARY IS A NECESSARY INFORMATION RESOURCE FOR EVERY MODERN FAMILY • SMALL HOMES SHOULD SUBSTITUTE BOOK SHELVES IF THERES IS NO EXTRA ROOM WHICH COULD BE USED • SHELVES CAN BE DISTRIBUTED AT DIFFERENT AREAS OF THE HOUSE, WITH RELEVANT CONTENTS OTHER FAMILY COMMUNITION SYSTEMS

  27. BASIC RESOURCES FOR AN AVERAGE FAMILY LIBRARY • DICTIONARIES…………………..WORDS • ENCYCLOPAEDIAS............GENERAL INFORMATION • ATLAS………………………….GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION • ALMANAC…………………..STATISCAL INFORMATION • HANDBOOK…………BASIC INFORMATION • BIOGRAPHIES……..PEOPLE’S LIFE’S HISTORIES • DIRECTORIES…..NAMES & ADDRESSES • JOURNALS • SELF-DEVELOPMENT & GROWTH BOOKS • HEALTH BOOKS • FAITH BOOKS, ETC. FAMILY RESOURCE REQUIREMENTS

  28. EMERGENCIES AND INJURIES: SOMETIMES, WHEN SOME EMERGENCY OR HEALTH SITUATIONS OCCUR, FIRST AID AND OTHER REMEDIES CAN BE FOUND IN THE INTERNET AND LIVES ARE SAVED. • COMMUNICATION GAPS HAVE LARGELY BEEN BRIDGED BY MODERN ICTS • HEALTH OF FAMILY MEMBERS IS GUARANTEED DURING THE ABSENCE OF SOME MAJOR MEMBERS AS THE PARENTS POSITIVE ENHANCEMENT OF ICT LITERACY IN FAMILIES

  29. FAMILIES SHOULD HAVE A COLLECTION OF NECESSARY AWARENESS MATERIALS FOR THE FAMILY TO READ AND BE ENLIGHTENED; SUCH ARE: EDUCATION MATERIALS, RIGHTS MATERIALS, THE COUNTRY’S CONSTITUTION, SCIENCE & RESEARCH MATERIALS ETC. • CHILDREN SHOULD BE TAUGHT THEIR BASIC RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES AND WHY THEY SHOULD LOVE THEMSELVES • “NIGERIAN CHILD’S RIGHTS ACT 2003: PART 11, NO. 4 “EVERY CHILD HAS A RIGHT TO SURVIVAL AND DEVELOPMENT”; NO. 13 “EVERY CHILD IS ENTITLED TO ENJOY THE BEST ATTAINABLE STATE OF PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND SPIRITUAL HEALTH”. IMPORTANCE OF THE KNOWLEDGE OF HUMAN RIGHTS

  30. The NPA document principally targets maternal and child care, HIV and AIDS, poverty linked-disease devastating poor countries and other challenges of development. • The mandate of the Millennium Development (MDG) goals has that “All established institution should strategize their objectives to actualize that of the MDG.” • Secretariat and expected results to be achieved by the year 2015 are: • Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger • Achieve universal primary education MILLENIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS MANDATES

  31. Promote gender equality and empower women • Reduce child mortality • Improve maternal health • Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Other Diseases • Ensure environmental sustainability • Promote global partnership for development MILLENIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS MANDATES

  32. Poverty: incident is higher in rural than urban areas; women are not financially empowered to help themselves and their children • Access to medical care facilities: Delay in reaching hospital for obstetrics emergency cases cause new born mortality also • Beliefs: negative socio-cultural practices affect the infants negatively. Women have to wait for husbands to take vital decisions; many infants have died in local areas through this delay. Son preference make parents to act faster with male children than the female ones MILLENIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS MANDATES

  33. Lack of Education and Information: Women need to enhance their educational level and access to information because they are the major caregivers of children • Prevention plays an essential role in maintaining public health, particularly children’s health. Health education and vaccinations prevent the spread of infectious disease. • The right to children’s health also includes pre and postnatal care for mothers. A new born will have a much lower chance of survival if the mother dies due to complications from pregnancy or childbirth. IMPORTANCE OF THE KNOWLEDGE OF HUMAN RIGHTS

  34. THE NATIONAL PLAN OF ACTION (NPA) 2009- 2015 ON THE CHILD RIGHTS ACT (CRC) AND CONVENTION ON THE RIGHTS OF THE CHILD (CRA) WAS AS A RESULT OF THE RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE WORLD SUMMIT ON CHILDREN IN SEPTEMBER 1990. IT IS ALSO IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE 1992 SPECIAL SESSION OUTCOME DOCUMENT: “A WORLD FIT FOR CHILDREN”. THE NPA IS A MANIFESTATION OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OF NIGERIA’S DESIRE TO PRIORITIZE THE WELL-BEING OF CHILDREN AS A PRIME ISSUE. THE NPA FOCUSES ON THE FOLLOWING ISSUES: • PUTTING CHILDREN FIRST AS A STATE POLICY • EDUCATING EVERY CHILD • PROTECTING CHILDREN FROM HARM AND EXPLOITATION • ENSURING ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY FOR CHILDREN IMPORTANCE OF THE KNOWLEDGE OF HUMAN RIGHTS

  35. Vaccinating children, and having awareness campaigns, cause a significant reduction in health risks. Communicating basic information about hygiene, nutritional needs, etc., and distributing simple print materials as reminders to people on the fundamental rules and actions for improving health are positive actions. INFANT HEALTH

  36. For children, the right to health is vital because they are most vulnerable, more at risk to prevailing illness and health complications. When children are saved from disease, they grow into healthy adults, and contribute to the development of dynamic and productive societies. INFANT HEALTH

  37. Children require extra attention in order to enjoy the best possible health. This allows them to develop properly during their childhood and teenage years. At every step of their physical and mental development, children have specific needs and different health risks. Additionally, a newborn is more vulnerable and more exposed to certain diseases than a young child or teenager (i.e. infectious disease, malnutrition.) INFANT HEALTH

  38. These are people between the ages of 10 & 19. There is need to address the challenges of health faced by the adolescents because of the crises of different development patterns that occur in their bodies. • These children’s body develop fully for full functionality during early adult years. Unfortunately, some of them, due to beliefs, ignorance and poverty are married. As the bodies are not fully ready for the stress of childbirth, they suffer some injuries. ADOLESCENT HEALTH

  39. Young people lack access to relevant sources of health information, particularly that of sex and reproduction. This has caused them to be victims of poor health, physical, mental and social challenges. • Infectious diseases are frequent with children suffering from malnutrition and those who have no access to clean drinking water • In poor regions, pregnancies and deliveries are often very risky for the mother’s and the children’s health. ADOLESCENT HEALTH

  40. FAMILY WELLBEING IS MORE THAN THE OUTWARD APPEARANCE OF A BEAUTIFUL HOME, BEAUTIFUL CHILDREN, BASIC COMFORT AND AVAILABILITY OF ALL FORMS OF FOOD AND AWARENESS/LITERACY RESOURCES • BUT THE LITERACY FRIENDLINESS OF THE FAMILY MEMBERS WITH THE ICTS AND OTHER AVAILABLE RESOURCES FOR LEARNING AND SELF-DEVELOPMENT/GROWTH • FAMILY HEALTH IS POSITIVELY ENHANCED WHEN FAMILY MEMBERS ARE ENLIGHTENED ON THE PROPER USE OF ICT GADGETS, HEALTH DEVELOPMENT INFORMATION AND FOOD ENGINEERING FINAL WORDS

  41. DON’T BE VICTIM OF IGNORANCE! THERE ARE LOTS OF AVENUES TO ACCESS INFORMATION FOR LIFE AND HEALTHY LIVING SOME PROFESSIONS OFFER LICENCE “TO CURE AND TO KILL”; PARTICULARLY IN SITUATIONS WHERE HUMAN RIGHTS ARE NOT RESPECTED DON’T BE COMPUTER ILLITERATE IN A COMPUTER AGE PLEASE, AWAKE AND JOIN THE RACE FOR YOUR LIFE!
