Do Now • Pick up notes sheet • Answer the questions in…. 3 complete sentences at the top of the notes sheet. • When finished put your pen down and look up. • Note: Today is worth 15 points in the Impacts of Science Section of your grade. This DO NOW is 3 of thoose points.
Intro to Cells Cell Theory, single celled organisms vs multicellular organisms, surface area to volume ratio, differentiation in cells.
Wacky History of the cell theory • http://ed.ted.com/lessons/the-wacky-history-of-cell-theory
Cell theory • How do we know about cells? • The cell theory grew from the work and research of many scientists. • What did they use? • More was learned about cells as microscopes improved over the years
Robert Hooke • Used light microscopes to look at plant tissue • Noticed that a piece of dead cork had tiny chambers • Called them cells because they looked like the cells of a monastery Hooke's Microscope Hooke's drawing of Cork Cells
B. Anton van Leeuwenhoek (LAY-vuhn-hook) • One of first people to use a microscope to study living things from nature • Able to see things that no one had seen before • First person to see the tiny organisms living in pond water
Other important Scientists C. Matthias Schleiden (SHLY-dun) • All plants are made of cells D. Theodor Schwann • All animals are made of cells E. Rudolf Virchow • Looked at how cells reproduce • Cells come from cells that already exist
These scientists’ studies led to the development of the cell theory! • A theory is a well tested hypothesis that can explain a broad range of observations • The cell theory applies to all living things BIG and small and has three main principals • Cells can provide a lot of information about living things
The cell theory • All organisms are made of one or more cells • Some organisms are made of one cell • Others are multicellular or made up of many cells
The cell theory • The cell is the most basic unit of life
The cell theory • All existing cells are produced by other living cells
Exit Slip • What are the three main principles of Cell Theory? • Why are cells, called cells?
Cell size • Read plot summary of the blob & answer questions. • Does this seem plausible? • What seems realistic & what seems fake? • Watch the video. • Discuss in class: • Can one cell be that big? • What size limitations are on cells?
