Timing • Choosing the right time to send a message affects how well it is received. • Knowing whether someone is ready and willing to listen to your message takes skill and sensitivity.
Use of space • Conversation is most effective when both people are comfortable with the distance between them • Messages flow when people feel they have equal status
Listening Skills Passive listening Active Listening Trying to understand the speaker’s feeling and the message’s true meaning Make comments about the conversation that are designed to draw out information • Provides responses that invite the speaker to share feelings and ideas • Like “no kidding” • And “you said it”
Listening Tips • Probe for missing information. • Clarify any points that you might not completely understand. • Remember the important points of the message for future application • Paraphrase the message to the speaker in order to confirm your understanding. • • Repeat the message to help you remember what was said.
