STAAR Essay Prep: Constructing an Effective 28-Line Essay

You will construct a 28 line essay and highlight all of the following: thesis, hook, transition words, topic sentences, and supporting evidence. • You will present your essay and highlight all of its components to the class for a major grade.

Review • Thesis-a proposition stated or put forward for consideration, especially one to be discussed and proved as the subject for an essay. • Hook- the first sentence in an essay that attempts to grab the reader's attention so that they want to read on. It can be done by using a few different types of hooks, which are a question, quote, statistic, or anecdote (story).

7. Review • Transition Words- words and phrases that provide a connection between ideas, sentences, and paragraphs. Transitions help to make a piece of writing flow better.
