Elements that make up each structure of DNA • These elements are Carbon, Nitrogen, Phosphate, Hydrogen , Oxygen • Each sugar molecule is covalently linked to one of 4 possible bases (Adenine, Guanine, Cytosine and Thymine.)
MONOMERS OF DNA & RNA • The monomers of DNA and RNA are nucleotides which are made up of a phosphate group . In DNA, the nitrogenous bases are Adenine , Cytosine, Guanine and Thyme in RNA
Base pair rules • The rules pairing or nucleotide pairing are A with T the Purine Adenine(A)always pairs with Pyrimidine Thymine (T) with G The Pyrimidine Cytosine ( C) always pairs with the prime Guanine (G)
DNA vs RNA DNA is a double helix RNA is a single strand Nitrogen Bases: Nitrogen Bases: Adenine , Thymine Adenine, Uracil Guanine, Cytosine Guanine, Cytosine
Genes • A Gene is a length of DNA that codes for a specific protein. For example one gene will code for the protein insulin, which is important role in helping your body to control the amount of sugar in your blood.
CHROMOSOMES • DNA molecules are tightly packed around proteins called hailstones to make structures called Chromosomes. • Human beings have 23 pairs of Chromosomes in every cell, which makes 46 Chromosomes in total. • The sex Chromosomes determine whether you are a boy (XY) or a girl (XX).
DNA vs RNA(compare and contrast) DNA DNA is a double helix DNA makes proteins SAME They both work in the nucleus They both are Nucleic acid RNA RNA helps read the gene RNA is a single trend RNA primers most be removed
