  3. Distribution • From Eurasia (central and western) • Came to U.S. in 1986 • Brought to Texas accidentally from Mexico • Can now be found in many western states (California, Colorado, Nevada, etc.)

  5. What Effects Has it Caused?(People) • Mostly eats Wheat and Barley • Main economic effect: Farmers lose money by losing crops and by buying pesticides

  6. What Effects Has it Caused?(Ecosystems) • To save money by not buying pesticides, types of flies have been introduced to stop the aphids

  8. Reasons For Success • Many predators such as lady beetles are too large to enter the rolled leaves • Reproduce Asexually and all are female

  9. In The FutureAttempts to Stop the Menace • Farmers can plant their crops early • Trade off- unanticipated weather • Making sure plants are not under water stress • Trade off- might over water plants • Not planting wheat or barley • Trade off- fewer wheat and barley for us(consumers)

  10. Infected Crops • The Aphid injects a toxin into the plant while feeding and causes damage • The leaves then get white longitudinal streaks • The leaf then curls up

  11. Different Types • Winged (alate)- when the plant dies several nymphs grow wings • They seek a new host plant • Dark green thorax • Wingless (apterous)- produce many children • Normal green thorax
