NIPER : From a green today. . . to a GREENER tomorrow Dr. K. K. Bhutani Director, NIPER NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF PHARMACEUTICAL EDUCATION AND RESEARCH (NIPER), S.A.S. Nagar ( Mohali)
INTRODUCTION • First national level Institute in pharmaceutical sciences • Inception 1994 . Institute of National importance by an act of Parliament, 1998 • An autonomous body conceived to be the centre of excellence in education and research in pharmaceutical sciences. • Offers Post doctoral, M.Pharm, M.Tech. (Pharm.), M.S. (Pharm.), M.B.A. (Pharm.) & Ph.D. Courses for critical high tech manpower development. • Industry – academia interaction to promote healthcare of nation
Physical Attributes • Built in 130 acres in sector – 67, S.A.S. Nagar part of Tricity (Chd & P’kula) • Located in south-east part of Tricity • A seasonal rivulet – enters north corner & exits near south corner.
Campus Development Goals • To build as ecologically sustainable campus by : a. Introducing green cover, especially plants with known medicinal value b. Putting approx. 33% area under canopy cover c. Introducing measures for an eco-friendly environment & life style Sita Ashoka
Initiatives on course • Greening the campus • Medicinal Plant garden • Avenue & boundary plantation • Groves and Dels • Adopting green technologies Planned Section of MPG
Greening the campus • Planned development along major roads – green borders, green roads • More natural vegetation in the interiors – dotting with green • Reserve green areas along the rivulet – grouping of trees, thick shady areas (lungs of the campus) Green Reserve Area
Transition to transformation • Minimal removal of existing green cover • Existing element integrated with introduced element • Ecological balancing • No going back in time 20 year old tree
The Eco-Garden - A major section of MPG in 20 acres developed as Eco-garden • Little disturbance-selective clearance • Minimum interference- patch development • Optimum development • Integration of structures with surroundings Eco-Garden
Emerging outcomes / results • Canopy cover near 30% • Lesser air pollution, 6 reserve areas act as lungs of campus • Minimum temperatures lower by 0.8 – 1ºC than the surrounding sectors • > 200 species of Medicinal plants in the campus, > 80 species of trees • Fauna : 7 types each of reptiles & birds, 4 types of mammals
Adopting Green Technologies • Green buildings – few high rise, sunken windows, green pergolas • Effluent Management – ETP, strict chemical disposal regime, efficient solvent recovery. • No solid / pucca pavements - enough ground space for water percolation, moisture retention, sustaining ground water table • Adoption of CFL & LED technology • Harnessing solar energy • Water harvesting • Paper & wood alternatives
Adopting Green Technologies • Adopting appropriate waste disposal regime • Domestic organic wastes – composting • Infectious / Animal wastes – incinerator • Radioactive wastes – as per guidelines • Chemical wastes - ETP Incinerator
NIPER – Mini Model for an Eco road map ! • For each future development unit, we may have : • Minimal green cover requirement • Minimal power substitution with non conventional methods • Minimal water conservation requirements • Minimum no vehicle zone / area • Zero litter zones / areas • Minimal effluent generation Thank You
