  8. state capital • JACKSON ….. Two cool fact about jacksoncapital and the most populous city of the U.S. state of Mississippi. It is one of two county seats of Hinds County (the town of Raymond is the other),[3] but the city also contains areas in Madison and Rankin counties. During the 90s Jackson saw a decline in population while its suburbs boomed. Sometimes the city is credited with going through the stages the city of Atlanta went through 70s-90s with its suburbs. Jackson including its surrounding suburbs boast a strong economy as well as population. The 2000 census recorded Jackson's population at 184,256, but according to July 1, 2008 estimates, the city's population was 173,861 and its five-county Jackson metropolitan area had a population of 628,817.[4] The Jackson-Yazoo City combined statistical area, consisting of the Jackson metropolitan area and Yazoo Citymicropolitan area, has a population of over 600,000, making it the 88th-largest metropolitan area in the United States.[4]
