“Do this in memory of Me” as a foundation for The Roman Missal, third typical edition
Memory From the beginning Christians have celebrated the Eucharist and in a form whose substance has not changed despite the great diversity of times and liturgies, because we know ourselves to be bound by the command the Lord gave on the eve of his Passion: “Do this in memory of me” (C.C.C. #1356).
“We carry out this command of the Lord by celebrating the memorial of His sacrifice. In so doing, we offer to the Father what He has Himself given us, the gifts of His creation: bread and wine which, by the power of the Holy Spirit and by the words of Christ, become the Body and Blood of Christ. Christ is thus really and mysteriously made present” (C.C.C. #1357).
For Jews, memory means “to participate in actively, as if one was present at the event being remembered.” An historical event of God’s action is not stuck in the past, but is constantly present in sacred gatherings that celebrate the memory of God’s salvation.
The Haggadah,a collection of instructions detailing the celebration of the Jewish Passover (Seder) meal, says “in every generation, every Jew must regard himself as though he, personally, was brought out of Egypt.”
“On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the Passover lamb,Jesus’ disciples said to Him, ‘Where do you want us to go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?’ He sent two of His disciples and said to them, ‘Go into the city and a man will meet you, carrying a jar of water. Follow him. Wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says, ‘Where is my guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’” Mark 14:12-14.
“While they were eating,He took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them, and said, ‘Take it; this is my body.’ Then He took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, and they all drank from it. He said to them, ‘This is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed for many.’” (Mark 14:22-24)
The Book of Revelation It is a vision of heaven: A foundation text of Christian Liturgy “After this I had a vision of an open door to heaven, and I heard the trumpet like voice that had spoken to me before, saying, ‘Come up here and I will show you what must happen afterwards.’” At once I was caught up in spirit. A throne was there in heaven, and on the throne sat one whose appearance sparkled like jasper and carnelian.” (Revelation 4:1-3a)
The Liturgy revealed in Revelation The Altar “When he broke open the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of those who had been slaughtered because of the witness they bore to the Word of God.” (6:9) “Another angel came and stood at the altar, holding a gold censer. He was given a great quantity of incense to offer, along with the prayers of all the holy ones, on the gold altar that was before the throne.” (8:3)
Vested Ministers “Surrounding the throne I saw twenty-four other thrones on which twenty-four elders sat, dressed in white garments and with gold crowns on their heads.” (4:4) “These are the ones who have survived the time of great distress; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. For this reason they stand before God’s throne and worship him day and night in his temple. The one who sits on the throne will shelter them.” (7:14b-15)
Candles “From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings, and peals of thunder. Seven flaming torches burned in front of the throne, which are the seven spirits of God.” (4:5) Liturgical Readings “I saw a scroll in the right hand of the one who sat on the throne. It had writing on both sides and was sealed with seven seals.” (5:1) “Then I watched while the Lamb broke open the first of the seven seals” (6:1)
Holy, Holy, Holy… “The four living creatures, each of them with six wings, were covered with eyes inside and out. Day and night they do not stop exclaiming: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God almighty, who was, and who is, and who is to come.” (4:8) A Confirmation of Isaiah 6: I saw the Lord seated on a high and lofty throne. One cried out to the other: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts! All the earth is filled with his glory!” (6:1b & 3)
What does it all mean? • The Mass is a living memory of the Last Supper; • It does nothing other than participate in the Liturgical action of heaven reported throughout the Old & New Testaments; “In the earthly Liturgy we take part in a foretaste of that heavenly Liturgy which is celebrated in the holy City of Jerusalem toward which we journey as pilgrims, where Christ is sitting at the right hand of God, a minister of the holies and of the true tabernacle.” (SacrosanctumConcilium 8)
The New Roman Missal What Changes & Why?
1. Why anew Translation? ► Two factors: ● Promulgation of Liturgiamauthenticam. ● Promulgation of the third edition of the Roman Missal. ► Issues with the current translation ● The present translation varies from the original intent of the Latin text at times. ● Some of the rich Biblical language and imagery of the Latin has been lost. ● Sometimes there is theological imprecision or or outright inaccuracy. ● There is a desire to render the translation in a way that makes it more easily prayed & sung.
An Example of Imprecision The Baptism of the Lord Post-Communion MissaleRomanum 2002: Sacromúneresatiáti, cleméntiamtuam, Dómine, supplíciterexorámus, ut, Unigénitumtuumfidéliteraudiéntes, fíliituiverenominémur et simus. Current Translation (1975): Lord, you feed us with bread from heaven. May we hear your Son with faith and become your children in name and in fact. Theological imprecision with 1975: “Become:” “Simus” is the first person plural passive subjunctive of esse, “to be.” Theologically we become children of God by Baptism and thus those “nourished with these sacred gifts” are already His children. Note also “Unigénitum,” is not translated. Roman Missal 2010: Nourished with these sacred gifts, we humbly entreat your mercy, O Lord, that, by faithfully listening to your Only Begotten Son, we may be your children in name and in truth.
2. Process of Translation ► Many were involved in the translating & editing. ► Compromises were made. ► The translation is not perfect; but translating is an inexact science. CHALLENGES One English translation for all English-speaking countries, but English is not the same for all peoples. Also, our English translation serves as an editiotypica for those without translation resources.
3. Why a New Translation is Important & What It will Accomplish ► The Liturgy is central to the life of the Church ► The new translation can promote & accomplish • ● A deeper sense of Mystery of God’s presence; • ● An opportunity for catechesis on the Mass; • ● A time to renew Eucharistic theology & spirituality; • ● Deeper communion with the Scriptures.
Scripture as the foundation of the Roman Missal in the revised OrdoMissae
1. The Introductory Rites ► In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. ● “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19). ► The grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. ● “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the holy Spirit be with all of you” (2 Corinthians 13:13).
► The Lord be with you. ● “Boaz himself came from Bethlehem and said to the harvesters, "The LORD be with you!" and they replied, "The LORD bless you!” (Ruth 2:4). ► And with your spirit. ● “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers. Amen” (Galatians 6:18). ● “The Lord be with your spirit” (2 Timothy 4:22). ● “We who are strong in faith should be patient with the scruples of those whose faith is weak; we must not be selfish. Each should please his neighbor so as to do him good by building up his spirit” (Romans 15:1-3). “Spirit” refers to the special character, or altered essence received by the priest (or Deacon) at his ordination. St. John Chrysostom says that the response, “And with your spirit,” is one through which we “remind ourselves that [the priest] does nothing of his own power, but is it the grace of the Spirit present and hovering over all things which prepared that mystic sacrifice;” – it is an acknowledgement of the Lord’s unique presence in the ordained minister.
► I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. I confess to God & my brothers & sisters ● “Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed” James 5:16. ● “I confess my guilt and grieve over my sin (Psalm 38:19).”
that I have greatly sinned… ● “Then David said to God, ‘I have greatly sinned in doing this thing. Take away your servant's guilt, for I have acted very foolishly” (1 Chronicles 21:8). ● “Jerusalem has greatly sinned. All who esteemed her think her vile now that they see her nakedness; She herself groans and turns away” (Lamentations 1:8). through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault… ● “If anyone sees his brother sinning, if the sin is not deadly, he should pray to God and he will give him life. This is only for those whose sin is not deadly. There is such a thing as deadly sin, about which I do not say that you should pray. All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that is not deadly” (1 John 5:14-21) to pray for me to the Lord our God. ● “Simon said in reply, "Pray for me to the Lord, that nothing of what you have said may come upon me” Acts 8:24.
2. The Preparation of the Gifts ► Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you: fruit of the earth and work of human hands, it will become for us the bread of life. ● “Then David blessed the LORD in the presence of the whole assembly, praying in these words: "Blessed may you be, O LORD, God of Israel our father, from eternity to eternity” (1 Chronicles 29:10) ● “I am the bread of life” (John 6:48). ► Blessed be God forever. ● “They exchanged the truth of God for a lie and revered and worshiped the creature rather than the creator, who is blessed forever” (Romans 1:25). ● “Awesome is God in his holy place, the God of Israel, who gives power and strength to his people. Blessed be God forever!” (Psalm 68:36).
► Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you: fruit of the vine and work of human hands, it will become our spiritual drink. ● “I tell you, from now on I shall not drink this fruit of the vine until the day when I drink it with you new in the kingdom of my Father” (Matthew 26:29). ● “All ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they drank from a spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was the Christ” (1 Corinthians 10:3-4).
2. The Liturgy of the Eucharist ► Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts. Heaven & earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. ● “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts!" they cried one to the other. All the earth is filled with his glory!” (Isaiah 6:3). ● “Day and night they do not stop exclaiming: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God almighty, who was, and who is, and who is to come” (Revelation 4:8). ● “The heavens declare the glory of God; the sky proclaims its builder's craft” (Psalm 19:2). ● “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. We bless you from the Lord’s house” (Psalm 118:26). ● “The crowds preceding him and those following kept crying out and saying: "Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in the highest” (Matthew 21:9).
3. Eucharistic Prayer III ► You are indeed Holy, O Lord, and all you have created rightly gives you praise, for through your Son our Lord Jesus Christ, by the power and working of the Holy Spirit, you give life to all things and make them holy, and you never cease to gather a people to yourself, so that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name. You are indeed Holy, O Lord … you give life to all things ● “Who is like to you among the gods, O Lord? Who is like to you, magnificent in holiness? O terrible in renown, worker of wonders” (Exodus 15:11) ● “Ezra said: ‘It is you, O Lord, you are the holy one; you made the heavens, the highest heavens and all their host, the earth and all that is upon it, the seas and all that is in them. To all you give life, and the heavenly hosts bow down before you” Nehemiah9:6).
You never cease to gather a people to yourself ● “Gather the people, notify the congregation; Assemble the elders, gather the children and the infants at the breast; Let the bridegroom quit his room, and the bride her chamber” (Joel 2:16). ● “Have the assembly of the peoples gather about you; sit on your throne high above them” (Psalm 7:7). so that from the rising of the sun to its setting … a pure sacrifice ● “From the rising of the sun to its setting let the name of the Lord be praised” (Psalm 113:3). ● “For from the rising of the sun, even to its setting, my name is great among the nations; & everywhere they bring sacrifice to my name, and a pure offering; For great is my name among the nations, says the Lord of hosts” (Malachi 1:11). ● “In every place and at every time offer me a pure sacrifice; for I am a great king, says the Lord, and My name is wonderful among the nations” (Didache 14:3).
► Therefore, O Lord, we humbly implore you: by the same Spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration, ● “So humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time” (1 Peter 5:6). ● “Humble yourselves before the Lord and he will exalt you” (James 4:10). ● “For the glorious adornment of your brother Aaron you shall make holy vestments” (Exodus 28:2). ► that they may become the Body and Blood of your Son our Lord Jesus Christ, at who whose command we celebrate these mysteries.
► For on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread, and, giving you thanks, he said the blessing, broke the bread and gave it to his disciples, saying: ● “For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you, that the Lord Jesus, on the night he was handed over, took bread…” (1 Corinthians 11:23). ● “Then he took the bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them” (Luke 22:19). ► TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND EAT OF IT, FOR THIS IS MY BODY, WHICH WILL BE GIVEN UP FOR YOU. ► In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice, and, giving you thanks, he said the blessing, and gave the chalice to his disciples, saying:
► TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND DRINK FROM IT, FOR THIS IS THE CHALICE OF MY BLOOD, THE BLOOD OF THE NEW AND ETERNAL COVENANT, WHICH WILL BE POURED OUT FOR YOU AND FOR MANY FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS. DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME. ● “Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, ‘Drink from it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed on behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins” (Matthew 26:27-28). ● “He said to them, ‘This is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed for many’” (Mark 14:24). ● “Therefore I will give him his portion among the great, and he shall divide the spoils with the mighty, Because he surrendered himself to death and was counted among the wicked; & he shall take away the sins of many, and win pardon for their offenses” (Isaiah 53:12).
► The Mystery of Faith ● These words were once placed in the middle of the words of consecration over the chalice, probably because the Deacon used to hold the chalice during this portion of the early Mass. ● While Jesus did not say these words in any of the recorded Institution Narratives, He did say “for many” in two of the four accounts. ● While Jesus did not say these words in any of the recorded Institution Narratives, He did say “for many” in two of the four accounts. ● “Similarly, deacons must be dignified, not deceitful, not addicted to drink, not greedy for sordid gain, holding fast to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience” (1 Timothy 3:9). ● “Undeniably great is the mystery of devotion, Who was manifested in the flesh, vindicated in the spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed to the Gentiles, believed in throughout the world” (1 Timothy 3:16).
► We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrection until you come again. or When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup, we proclaim your Death, O Lord, until you come again. ● “For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes” (1 Corinthians 11:26). ► Save us, Savior of the world, for by your Cross and Resurrection you have set us free. ● “The living God, who is the savior of all” (1 Tim 4:10). ● “We no longer believe because of your word; for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the savior of the world” (John 4:42). ● “For freedom Christ set us free” Galatians 5:1).
3. The Communion Rite ► Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, grant us peace. ● “The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). ● “For our paschal lamb, Christ, has been sacrificed” (1 Corinthians 5:7). ● “Then I saw standing in the midst of the throne and the four living creatures and the elders, a Lamb that seemed to have been slain. He had seven horns and seven eyes; these are the seven spirits of God sent out into the whole world” (Revelation 5:6).
► Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. ● “The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). ● “Then the angel said to me, "Write this: Blessed are those who have been called to the wedding feast of the Lamb." And he said to me, "These words are true; they come from God” (Revelation 19:9). ► Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed. ● “And Jesus went with them, but when he was only a short distance from the house, the centurion sent friends to tell him, "Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof. Therefore I did not consider myself worthy to come to you, but say the word and let my servant be healed” (Luke 7:6-7).
4. The Dismissal ► Go forth, the Mass is ended. ● “Go forth, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19). ● “Let us then go forth to him outside the camp, bearing the reproach that he bore” (Hebrews 13:13). ► Go and announce the Gospel of the Lord. or Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life. or Go in peace. ● “In the same way, the Lord ordered that those who announce the Gospel should live by the Gospel” (1 Corinthians 9:14). ● “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you” (John 14:27).
