Literacy Memoir – Peer Review WRA 150 9.17.12
What is Peer Review? • Peer’s reviewing • Giving tips on writing • Different perspective on writing • Collaboration: working together to improve • See other people’s papers
What’s your experience with Peer Review? • Good • Opinion, catch errors • Provide help expanding on ideas • Eliminate unnecessary language (FLUFF/BS) • Comparison • Bad • People aren’t tough enough • Problems of expertise • People focus on grammar (when not appropriate)
What is the perfect peer review? • Straight shooter (tell you how it is, blunt) • Nice, cordial, professional • Let you know what you are doing well& what you can improve on • Knows what they are talking about
What generally happens • Most comments focus on grammar & language • Peer Review deals with rough drafts, and lots can change. • Language & Grammar are worth the least on the rubrics. • Many comments were superficial. • I am glad that you like parts of your peers papers, but why? Help them do it again.
Example Grammar Comments • “I think that you need to check your grammar. For example, Because I had a chance to see Roy Jones Jr’s match. You have conjunction and you need one more sentence.” • “Make sure your words are in order. ex. I have really trouble with rhythmical sense. instead say ‘I really have trouble with rythmical sense.’ ”
Example Superficial Comments • “I liked the amount of detail that you put into describing the literacy and found it very interesting.” • “I like how you said softball is your language.” • “It flowed very well.”
Brainstorm • How can we give better comments?
MAPS • M • A • P • S
MAPS • Mode • Genre that piece of writing is composed. Certain genres have features that could effect the writing. • A • P • S
MAPS • M • Audience • Who is this paper being written to? • P • S
MAPS • M • A • Purpose • Why is this paper being written? • S
MAPS • M • A • P • Situation • 1) The situation of the writing • 2) The situation of the writer
What to comment on? Good comments will use MAPS!
What a good comment should do • A good comment provides context • I see that you started the second paragraph by doing “x.” • A good comment assesses. • I think using an example was a good idea. • A good comment offers advice. • I think you need to have more context, maybe you should start by introducing the topic first.
Put it all together… • “In your second paragraph I see that you decided to start it with an example.I think that this is a little confusing. It might be easier for your reading to understand your topic if you introduce the idea first. For example you could say, “Ever since I was a kid I loved baseball.” • Step further: You can point to examples in the paper where the writer did the same thing successfully.
