  4. 1840 Van Buren vs. Harrison Whigs are the anti king Jackson party with values of the Federalists and National (D) Republicans. 1844 Polk vs. Birney vs. Clay The Democratic party becomes also the party of expansion which appeals to the other elements of the Jeffersonian Democratic Republican party

  5. 1856: What would the new 2nd party be? The Xenophobic anti-immigrant Know Nothing American party or the anti spread of slavery, mix of the conscious Whigs, the Free soilers, and the more radical Liberty party who make up the new Republican Party

  9. 1920s, 1950s, 1980s, 2000s Modern Republican Presidents believe in laissez faire economics, limited government, support of big business, and supply side economics Harding supports “normalcy”, Coolidge believes the “business of America is business”, Hoover supports the associative state, repeated by Eisenhower and Reagan and both Bush administrations. However Reagan and Bush are neocons that increase the deficit due to expanded foreign policy (A little reminder of Mckinley?)
