Sam Walton Born on March 29th, 1918 in Kingfisher, Oklahoma First Walmart was built in 1962 Died on April 5th, 1992 Little Rock, Arkansas By his death there were Walmarts in 15 international countries including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and India All together there were 1,960 Walmartswhen he died His death was caused by multiple myeloma
  3. Life of Sam In high school he was a student leader, basketball star, and quarterback For three years he was a captain in the U.S. Army Intelligence Corps. Married Helen on Valentine’s day Sam’s dream in life was at first to only open a small variety store
  4. Random After he served in the military he went to go work at a JC Penney store Instead of taking all of the credit for the success of Walmart, Sam gave it to all of his employees Sam had invested in early technology like barcodes Walmart was one of the first stores to use barcodes
  5. Sam’s Genius Even after Sam was rich he still drove around in his pick-up truck because he didn’t want to waste money on brand new cars His Cooperate headquarters had no fancy flooring or executive dining areas To get his first business started his father-in-law had given him $20,000
  6. Accomplishments In 1991 Sam was named America’s most successful merchant Before he died George Bush had awarded Sam with the Presidential Medal of Freedom Now there are over 9,700 Walmarts in the world
