  1. Acceleration Notes

  2. Definition • Acceleration is a change in velocity per time. • So it is change in position per time per time. • acceleration cares about direction

  3. Forms of acceleration • Slowing down • stopping • Speeding up • Turning • spinning

  4. Pretend Car Ride • Get in your pretend car and act out the ride I describe.

  5. Think about the ride • your car will move before you do, which is why you lean. You lean only when something accelerates

  6. Equation • a = (vf-vi) / t • a is accelerationvi is initial velocityvf is final velocityt is time

  7. Units • Standard unit is m/s2 • V / t • m/s /s • m/(s*s) • m/s2 Of course, meters or seconds could be replaced by any other appropriate unit for distance or time.

  8. direction • If acceleration and velocity are the same sign it is getting faster • If acceleration sign is opposite of velocity it is slowing down • Direction of acceleration does not determine direction of MOTION • Turning also is acceleration, but positive negative no longer work

  9. Check out how acceleration effects change in position • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQ4znShlK5A

  10. Practice 1 • An object starts a velocity of 2m/s forward and ends at a velocity of 8m/s forward and that takes it 3s. What was its acceleration? • What direction is its motion? • Is it getting faster or slower?

  11. Practice 2 • An object starts at a velocity of 5m/s right and ends at a velocity of 1m/s right after a time of 2s. What was its acceleration? • What direction is its motion? • Is it getting faster or slower?

  12. Practice 3 • And object starts at a velocity of -10m/s (left) and ends at a velocity of -2m/s (left) after a time of 4s. What is its acceleration? • What direction is its motion? • Is it getting faster or slower?

  13. Practice 4 • An object starts at rest (0m/s) and accelerates at 2.5m/s2 right for a time of 4s. What is its final velocity? • What direction is its motion? • Is it getting faster or slower?

  14. Practice 5 • An object starts off travelling East at 10m/s and then turns south and continues travelling at 10m/s without ever changing its speed. The whole trip took 5s. Did the object accelerate? Why or why not?

  15. Practice 6 • Can an object with an acceleration of 0m/s2 be moving? Can it be not moving?
